FOX Japan: Hell by Doug Black

fox_japan.jpg

The closing track on FOX Japan's recent disc, "Hell," recounts tales of pre-pubescent revelry in early-nineties West Virginia. A spot-on portrait—complete with references to Capri Sun and and Boyz II Men—"'91" is also an apt staging ground for the West Virginia-based group's guitar-driven pop rock, which has clear references to the golden age of mid-nineties alt rock.

A classically-trained composer, guitarist and vocalist Charlie Wilmoth leaves his experimental hat on the proverbial shelf in FOX Japan. The band's catchy, off-kilter tunes have echoes of Superchunk and Archers of Loaf, while lyrical content takes the form of explicit, straightforward narratives. Wilmoth explores everything from failed marriages to conservative punditry with a blunt, declarative voice. Rounded out by brothers Sam (bass) and Pete (drums) with Andrew Slater on guitar, "Hell" is a mixed bag of plaintive story-songs and impassioned dissonance held together by an underlying knack for melody and infectious riffs.

You can purchase Hell for $8 on CD Baby or directly from the band's PayPal. Catch FOX Japan live in the coming weeks, including stops at Brooklyn's Trash Bar on 27 December 2008 and the Red & the Black on 2 January 2009 in Washington DC.

Interview with Singer-Songwriter Kim Garrison
For Kim Garrison making a living playing music has been a difficult path but also one of the most rewarding. CH caught up with the California-native behind the hauntingly emotive vocals for a chat about moving to NYC, songs, summer and lip-synching. Have you always been in the music industry? Not exactly the "industry" but I've been around music my whole life. I played saxophone...
The Walkmen: You & Me Benefit Release
The Walkmen's new album You & Me has already been one of our oft-played summer albums. A couple years in the making and already getting a more positive response than their last release, the band's trademark lilting vocals (with appropriate nods to Dylan) and soaring arrangements make a good soundtrack for afternoon sailing or lazy bike rides. With the news of the $5 digital...
Maths Class
by Mat Lyon Maths Class are the latest U.K. band exploring the intersection where Post-Rock, New Wave, Pop and (yes) Math Rock collide. From the shards of this genre car crash, they form a compelling racket that's chaotic and precise in equal measure, jerking between passages at super speed and challenging the listener to keep up. They walk a tightrope of technical ability, creative endeavor...
The Kiss Off
Though they formed last year in Brooklyn, The Kiss Off could easily pass as Manchester natives from the early '80s. The band was founded by guitarist Adam De Rosa and bassist Nathan Lithgow, who lay distorted melodies over catchy drumming and synth drones. Sam Tyndall's vocals complete the band, which sounds something like a better-produced Joy Division or a more brooding Franz Ferdinand. The...
