Paralela 2008: From Near and Far by Phuong-Cac Nguyen

In stark contrast to this year's much-criticized São Paulo Biennial, the concurrently running, off-circuit Paralela '08 "From Near and Far" is a heady alternative for those looking for a more rigorous program than what's being offered inside the Oscar Neimeyer building.

With work on display from 61 Brazilian artists from the best galleries in São Paulo—such as Casa Triangulo, Galeria Luisa Strina, Galeria Vermelho, Galeria Milan and Galeria Nara Roesler—this year's theme borrows a title from French anthropologist's Claude Levi-Strauss' book. Curator Rodrigo Moura chose works revolving around the theme of place, all produced circa 1970 and after. While a lot of these artists are not hugely known to the mainstream, they show supreme promise in Brazil's future as a place with something to say in contemporary art, like Debora Bolsoni's scattered porcelain popcorn to the various photo sets from Artur Barrio and Claudia Andujar. Books, video and mixed media work balance out the rest.

Paralela, hosted in the breathtaking space of the Liceu de Artes e Oficios, has been running in line with the São Paulo Biennial since 2002 and is turning out to be a formidable competitor. You can watch a short episode from the Metropolis television show of a little bit of what's on display here.

Herbert Baglione:Two Broken Knees
by Ariston Anderson Herbert Baglione is one of Brazil's most provocative exports, currently bringing his humanistic paintings to a new show in London. Baglione got his start as a street artist, painting huge figures onto the sidewalks and intersections of São Paulo throughout the '90s, but has since taken only to the galleries drawing on his street background. His latest work, "Two Broken Knees," projects...
28th São Paulo Biennial
In spite of strong criticism about its anti-biennial "In Living Contact" theme, the 28th São Paulo Biennial nevertheless seemed to please attendees at the kickoff last Saturday, probably due in part to the hands-on participation element. Everyone left with tons of reading material in their hands, from little art books to mini posters. Curated by Ivo Mesquita and Ana Paula Cohen, this year's biennial...
Nina Pandolfo: Aos Nossos Olhos
Little girls with glassy eyes as round as fishbowls playing in nature are the subjects of São Paulo artist Nina Pandolfo's "Aos Nossos Olhos" (To Our Eyes) show at super cutting-edge Galeria Leme. The name Pandolfo might ring a bell. Nina is married to one of the legendary Os Gemeos graffiti twins but has been making strides on her own as a street artist...
God Is Design
Galeria Fortes Vilaça, one of São Paulo's most important galleries (which represents such art heavyweights as Os Gemeos and Vik Muniz), is breaking in its new Galpão Fortes Vilaça archival space this weekend with an internationally studded group show called "God Is Design" curated by P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center's Neville Wakefield. The curator took cue from the industrial design of the building to inspire...
