iBerry Homemade Ice Cream Shops by Doug Black

More often associated with curry and chili peppers, Southeast Asian cuisine is less noted for its ice cream. I was of this mind while traveling through the region until happening upon an attractive Bangkok location of iBerry Homemade. The small chain of ice cream, smoothie and bake shops have been thriving throughout the Thai capital for years and for good reason. Highly-stylized, the shops sell a seemingly endless array of treats that get points for both taste and creativity. Old standbys like blueberry cheesecake meet green tea pastry rolls made to look like sushi rolls.

But with more than 100 flavors, ice cream is their biggest draw. Flavors range from the everyday (chocolate, vanilla, coffee) to the unusual (creamy corn, black sesame, blueberry cheese pie). They also stock plenty of sorbets derived from regional fruits — like guava, mangosteen and jack fruit — that they rotate often so you're always getting what's currently in season. My favorite was an unlikely combination: salted plum sorbet. Purchased out of pure curiosity, the salty-sweet interplay was initially strange but remarkably satisfying.

Arguably more enticing than the product itself is the setting. Though it's a growing chain — with a dozen locations around Bangkok one in Phuket, Chiang Mai and Pattaya — iBerry retains a fiercely independent feel. Each location exhibits a totally distinct appearance, with unlikely chandeliers and other creative decor. The iBerry I visited in Chiang Mai (pictured) is set back behind a sizable lawn, and surrounded by sculptures and a giant Koonsian dog.

Kittiwat Unarrom: Bread Body Parts
Since 2006 Thai artist Kittiwat Unarrom (whose family also runs a bakery) has used dough as his medium to sculpt gruesome renditions of hand, feet, heads, torsos and other body parts. The results are unnervingly realistic with eyes, lips and other details constructed out of cashews, raisins and the like. A lack of hair and blood-like glazes make the work all the more creepy....
Coconut Milk Yogurt and Ice Cream
With everybody suddenly becoming allergic to everything, all kinds of new food alternatives are popping up. The latest we've sampled is a line of organic coconut milk-based "ice creams" and "yogurts" from Turtle Mountain. The same makers behind So Delicious and Purely Decadent, Turtle Mountain has already made a name for themselves in the world of non dairy treats. Technically called cultured coconut milks...
Mastihashop
Recently opened on Manhattan's Lower East Side, the Mastihashop is the Greek company's first U.S. boutique. The shop specializes in all manner of products made with Mastiha, an all natural antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial resin which can only be harvested from the sap of evergreen bushes found exclusively in the southern part of the Greek Island of Chios. In use for 2,500 years as...
Pinkberry
If you haven’t heard about the wonders of Pinkberry, it's neither a new fragrance nor a nasty skin condition but rather a frozen yogurt phenomena that's already taken over LA and recently opened their first NYC location in Koreatown. Available in only two flavors, plain and green tea (although I've heard no one ever gets the green tea), it’s the many toppings—fresh fruit, crunchy...
