Zaha Hadid, the first woman recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, designed a door handle a couple years back that was manufactured by Italian hardware company Valli & Valli and it is finally on sale now.
In a collaboration with Woody Yao, the handle, which is called ZH Duemilacinque, was originally created for the Puerta America Hotel in Madrid. The hotel is conceived from the perspective of a dozen architects whose creative concepts were invested in one of twelve floors. Hadid designed the entire first floor with a spaced age futuristic facade.
The handle is part of Valli & Valli’s Fusital Collection that features the work of renowned designers and architects including Frank Gehry, Richard Meier and Cini Beori. Made from nikrall zamak alloy, the attention to detail emphasizes the turning motion and the contours of the grip. It’s available in chrome or satin chrome starting at $440 at the Valli & Valli sales center. Contact them directly at sales [at] vallivalli-us [dot] com.

This looks like a cheap version of the Compact Design Living space we saw a few months ago. A crane stacks these guys 3 units high, each unit is complete with a kitchen, shower, and toilet. They look almost Japanese in design, like a capsule hotel. I wonder if these will become popular; maybe in small creative communites in Rotterdamn where they were designed....
For the inaugural video in our new series of mini-episodes, we're pleased to present a document of the New Orleans-based Billes Architecture's first-ever design competition. We were honored to be invited as a judge and, as you'll see in the video, the results are nothing less than stunning and—perhaps—harbingers of the design future....
by Russ LoweEmerging from a veritable seedbed of interesting architectural endeavors, one of Portland's latest and most compelling building projects is as much a study in anatomy as it is in design. A community-focused and environmentally conscious new development, Clinton Condominiums unites spectacular design with ergonomic construction. The sophomore release from celebrated mixed-use developer Randy Rapaport takes its name from one of the Southeast quadrant's...
The winner of the Architecture Design category for Cooper-Hewitt's 2008 National Design Awards, at 54 Tom Kundig maintains a youthful sense of wonder at the path his career has taken. He refers to his recent string of successes as something like riding a wave, while citing the inimitable power of the internet to create fluid connections. Indeed, while the Seattle-based firm in which he...
Blurring the lines between what is a floor and what is a ceiling, the Jenga-like structure of Final Wooden House allows its occupiers to decide how to use the space according to their position. Comprised completely of wood, Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto wanted to express the versatility of lumber by creating one structure that embodies all of the typical functions normally carried out by...
