The Walkmen: You & Me Benefit Release by Ami Kealoha
The Walkmen's new album You & Me has already been one of our oft-played summer albums. A couple years in the making and already getting a more positive response than their last release, the band's trademark lilting vocals (with appropriate nods to Dylan) and soaring arrangements make a good soundtrack for afternoon sailing or lazy bike rides.
With the news of the $5 digital release benefiting Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where Luca (a seven-month-old friend of the band) is battling Leukemia, there are zero reasons not to buy the album now.You can do so from Amie Street (a site of note in its own right for the market-based pricing of their music downloads), which will offer the release for the next three weeks.

Maths Class
by Mat Lyon Maths Class are the latest U.K. band exploring the intersection where Post-Rock, New Wave, Pop and (yes) Math Rock collide. From the shards of this genre car crash, they form a compelling racket that's chaotic and precise in equal measure, jerking between passages at super speed and challenging the listener to keep up. They walk a tightrope of technical ability, creative endeavor...

The Kiss Off
Though they formed last year in Brooklyn, The Kiss Off could easily pass as Manchester natives from the early '80s. The band was founded by guitarist Adam De Rosa and bassist Nathan Lithgow, who lay distorted melodies over catchy drumming and synth drones. Sam Tyndall's vocals complete the band, which sounds something like a better-produced Joy Division or a more brooding Franz Ferdinand. The...

February 2008 Playlist
This time of year brings a surplus of album releases and, for us, along with the fresh tunes comes a desire to do little more than stay home and listen to music while watching surf videos. The result is a collection of new faves and old jams, both up-tempo and down, to get you through the leap year. Magnetic Fields: Distortion The first album from...

Ida Maria
So we heard the most amazing unsigned band in Williamsburg, Brooklyn the other night. Except we were at a noodle and dumpling bar called Snacky and the band was blaring from an iPod. Norwegian-by-way-of-Sweden Ida Maria and her bandmates are sure to be the next hot-shit-of-the-moment and their song "Oh My God" will not stop playing in our collective brain. Currently self-released on their...

Something Glorious Is Happening
A band has to be hot to sell out a decent-sized venue in advance the same week its debut album drops, not to mention selling out in numerous cities. It doesnt hurt that they played five packed shows at South By Southwest. Nor does being featured in a number of magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly,...

Ian Brown -- Solarized
Its always been amazing to me how British music fans can completely and wholly rally around an artist, like Robbie Williams or Kylie and America just doesnt pay any attention. Such is the case with Ian Brown. Many of you likely know him as the frontman for the Stone Roses ah, the Stone Roses, where dance music seamlessly meshed with rock. For without...
