Earth Art Exhibit: Nils-Udo by Ami Kealoha

by Kyle Small

Part of the Earth Art Exhibit at The Royal Botanical Gardens in Canada, the work of German artist Nils-Udo caught CH's eye. His installation consists of a grass-based ramp (or is it a bridge?) leading into the verdant forest of the Ontario backwood. It's a clever example of the intersection of nature and a constructed reality, revealing some of our conceptions of both. The sod pathway to nowhere makes us think for a minute, which is what we like about it. (See install shots below.)

Nils-Udo's work is only one of ten different international and local artists at the Earth Art Exhibit. We think they're all awesome and if you're an Andy Goldsworthy fan at all, you should definitely check out the rest of the exhibit.

Justin Gibbens
Justin Gibbens admits to having an "obsessive, unhealthy interest in all things that scamper and poke about in the thickets and undergrowth." Like most obsessive interests that are artfully managed with creativity, Gibbens has been able to channel his work as a contemporary wildlife artist into something magical. Imitating the conventions of 18th and 19th century zoological illustration and traditional Chinese fine-line painting, Gibbens...
Damián Ortega: Materialista
Mexican artist Damián Ortega's masterful new installation at Galpão Fortes Vilaça takes its title, "Materialista," from the Spanish word describing a truck that transports construction materials. The truck parts themselves are Ortega's chosen medium for the piece, a play on the idea of materialism and deconstruction. Totaling eight meters long, the Mexican artist hung steel parts from the ceiling to create the illusion of...
Dufala Brothers: Trophy
I'd never heard of Steven and Billy Blaise Dufala, two brothers producing art together under the moniker Dufala Brothers, until yesterday when Amy Adams, director of Fleisher/Ollman Gallery in Philadelphia, sent me a couple of jaw-dropping images of their recent work. Now I'm contemplating a day trip to Philly just to see their installation. "Long Runner" (below) and "Special Air Mission 28000" (right), are both...
Bas Louter: Dust (Asphault)
Currently on display at the Ambach & Rice gallery in Seattle's artsy neighborhood of Ballard is a collection of works from Amsterdam-based artist Bas Louter. Louter uses ink and charcoal to create a chiaroscuro effect for his works, which conflate historical characteristics and imagined futures to suggest an adventure into an unknown destination—explaining the latter portion of the exhibition's title. The initial word, Dust,...
