Radiohead at The Daydream Festival by Leonora Oppenheim

The pressure was on last night in Barcelona as one of the world's biggest bands took to the stage for their only gig in Spain on their European summer tour. Radiohead and festival organizers Sinnamon Productions had to deliver something extra special to a crowd that had traveled from far and wide to hear them perform tracks from In Rainbows. And deliver they did, not only aurally, which can almost be guaranteed from this group, but also visually with innovative lighting design set that lit up the stage spectacularly. The combined walls of sound and color wowed the crowd in equal measure.

Hanging strips of lights (which were drawn across the stage like a curtain at the beginning of the set) and the banks of seven cell lighting modules, worked in unison to create a dazzling show of pattern and color to chameleon-like effect. The set was designed by the U.K. stage lighting company i-Pix using Titan series LED lighting from Lamina. The same two companies collaborated on the Live Earth concert in London last year, which used a sixth of the energy consumption usually produced by concert lighting.

If last night was a taster of eco-friendly lighting, the future looks amazingly bright and colorful for the entertainment industry. Radiohead are pushing ahead on the sustainability of all aspects of touring, from traveling less to persuading the crowd drink from reusable cups. Take a look at Petz Scholtus' article over at TreeHugger to find out more about the band's "Carbon Neutral World Tour."

Sónar 2006
After our strange multimedia experience at Sonarama, it was time to get our dancing shoes on for Sónar. I was so enthusiastic about getting there that I was the first person off the first bus Friday night. Why in such as hurry you ask? Just one name: Gilles Peterson, the main man for funky soulful electro beats in the UK, with his amazing worldwide...
Sonarama
Ahhhh, summertime in Barcelona, can you feel the heat and the beats? Year-round this city's thumping to one rhythm or another, but summer months are a whole different story. For all the music festivals that descend on the town at this time of year, how anyone gets any sleep or does any work is a Catalan mystery. At its heart Barcelona is an electropolis...
Glow Fest 2008
by Perrin Drumm Last month, Santa Monica's pier hosted 12 hours of performance and installation art, attracting 200,000 revelers for Glow, a public light and sound extravaganza in the style of Paris' Nuit Blanche. This video navigates through both the throngs of people (almost more notable than the art itself) and the many luminous installations dotting the beach and boardwalk. At the far end,...
Keen Ventura Canvas
Dubbed "Hybrid Footwear," Keen's shoe line has a clear emphasis on sustainability. The Ventura Canvas reflects this philosophy, while maintaining a classic, casual sneaker design. Their first completely vegan shoe, the canvas upper uses organic cotton and recycled aluminum eyelets. Like the rest of Keen's line, the Ventura makes comfort a high priority. The removable metatomical footbed—made from jute, cork and natural latex—helps mold...
