Fashionable Technology
A massage-based video game controller, panties with wings and an inflatable dress were just a few of the concepts exhibited recently at the NYC gallery Eyebeam to launch Sabine Seymour's new book "Fashionable Technology." In this video, we interview Sabine about the burgeoning field and her lifelong obsession with fashion. She also helps us peruse the exhibit, chatting with the designers and artists behind...

A courter of controversy and a pusher of boundaries, empowering women everywhere, Dekkers has spent years making very...

Ride the City
To those who enjoy their status as breathing, sentient beings, riding a bicycle in New York City can be daunting. Aggressive taxis, delivery trucks and carelessly opened doors create a minefield that makes casual cyclists want to hang up their Schwinn. But New York can be safely navigated. Though it's painfully inferior to European cities, it does have a growing network of relatively safe...

Smart Spice
Spices tend to come in a pretty standard size; they also spoil within a few months of opening. For most home cooks that means a lot of waste and jars of stale spices sitting in a cabinet. Smart Spice solves this problem by packing its organic spices in several single use servings (four to a box), ensuring that you'll always have a fresh supply...

Tretorn NY Store and Gullwing Collection
Along with the recent opening of Tretorn's first NYC store, their recently announced Autumn/Winter 2008 collection, called Gullwing, is full of shoes riffing on the preppy classic in ways we can get behind. The Skymra, for example, swaps out laces for asymmetrical elastic bands, transforming the classic silhouette of the tennis shoe into an avant-slip-on. The canvas version ($70) in bright yellow with a...

Ísbjörn / Ice Bear Rug
This imitation polar bear-skin rug is designed by Reykjavik-based designer Sruli Recht for Birkiland. Limited to a single run of 10, the Ice Bear is not just the cute-and-cuddly accessory it appears. The designer hopes to pack a dose of symbolism into the classic man-over-beast accessory. Cobbled together from 15 different Icelandic sheepskins, it's meant to resemble the classic butcher's diagram poster that labels...

Plant Sense and the GardenGro Sensor
Plant Sense, a start up announced in 2006, is just entering public beta testing of its GardenGro Sensor. Think of it as Nike+ for your plants. After connecting the sensor to your computer and telling it whether you want to monitor an existing plant or analyze soil for a new plant, place the sensor (pictured above) in the soil/next to the plant for 24...

Clae Summer 2008
Due to belatedly launch in the next week, Clae's Summer 2008 collection is further testament to the flawless level of detail that the brand strives for. We love the bright, perfectly-hued monotones and contrasts in texture this season. But what struck us this time is how impressive it is for such a young label to consistently come up with shoes that stay true to...

The Deptford Project Cafe
The creative renaissance and urban revitalization of London continues to amaze. The Deptford Project is a creative program situated in the old railway yard of Deptford Station, the city's oldest passenger only station. To be redeveloped into a new public square by Alison Brooks Architects in 2010, the old railyard and a listed Victorian carriage ramp will serve as the fulcrum for an interim series...

Nau 2.0
Apparently we weren't the only ones saddened by the news earlier this year that eco-clothier Nau was shutting its doors. Thanks in part to an outpouring of support from the community, the Santa Barbara, CA-based label Horny Toad stepped in and bought the company. Sharing a commitment to doing business sustainably, it looks like a good match and we congratulate the both of them....

São Paulo Fashion Week Summer 2009 Highlights
World themes played out in a broad spectrum of colors, loose, bold forms (including jumpsuits), flashy details like low crotches and ruffles and in the abundance of the universally stylish material, denim, at São Paulo Fashion Week's presentations of summer collections. Adding to the cacophony, the usually clean white lines of Niemeyer's Bienal building where the fashion event took place was transformed into a...

Charles and Ray Eames Commemorative Stamps
As an unabashedly extreme fangirl of all things Eames, I am happy to say that the U.S. Postal Service is also feeling some Eames love this month. This week they have issued a hotly-anticipated set of 16 commemorative stamps honoring the iconic husband and wife design team whose work continues to be the standard against which all modern is measured. Through architecture, furniture and...

Girls Rock, The Movie
Most reviews of the 2007 documentary "Girls Rock," might mention it's a tearjerker (it is) or praise it for being uplifting (also true), but none so far mention the overwhelming urge you will get to take out your checkbook to support the cause. Arne Johnson and Shane King (two seasoned SF-based documentarians and longtime pals) tell the story of four girls, all dealing with...

Noa Nahari: Side Walk
Entering the latest installation at the Jerusalem Artists' House is an exercise in sensory confusion. After parting the heavy drape covering the threshold, the room's minimal lighting creates a momentary blackout before the eyes adjust. Even when your vision returns, there's not much to see. The small gallery space is empty, and the floor is covered wall-to-wall with seemingly unremarkable gray cinder blocks. The...
