Danielle Exotic Fruit and Veggie Chips

by Max Gold

by Maxwell Gold

Not all dried fruit snacks are created equally. Danielle all-natural, preservative-free Crispy Fruit and Crispy Veggie chips are a step above most other snack foods. We love them because they are cooked in small batches and seasoned with just a touch of salt to bring out the full flavor and to ensure superior taste.

We're especially enamored with the thick-cut Crispy Banana chips, which taste exactly like banana and, like all Danielle snacks, are made from hand-selected fruit. Also try the Sweet Jackfruit Chips, which have a pleasingly unique texture and surprisingly full flavor.

Danielle products can be found at any of these Whole Foods locations.

TokyoLife: Art and Design

by Doug Black

tokyolife.jpg

Tokyo demands your attention. Both the city's appearance and its visual output are impossible to summarize, though they always grab the eye. "TokyoLife: Art and Design" attempts to get a handle on the amorphous style of the megalopolis by looking at the actual players behind it.

The book highlights the work of more than 80 creative minds— including painters, architects, fashion designers, filmmakers and photographers— with the only commonality of pushing their specific art to the limit. Some are well known (like Takashi Murakami and Naoto Fukasawa) and others are rising stars that have yet to get recognition in the West. Authored by Ian Luna (who has produced several books on architecture, urbanism and design) TokyoLife has contributions from a team of art and design professionals on both sides of the Pacific. The excellent essay by Toshiko Mori (architect and chair of the design department at Harvard) attempts to explain how a city with no central architectural icon or cultural aesthetic is inspiring this unprecedented explosion in art and design.

TokyoLife can be purchased in the MoMA store or on Amazon.

Sutra: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui + The Shaolin Monks

by Leonora Oppenheim

SidiLarbiMonks.jpg

Sutra, the latest and most daring work by Belgian/Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui premiered at Sadlers Wells in London earlier this week. Best known for his celebrated performance with Akram Kahn in Zero Degrees, Larbi continues the collaborative theme in Sutra working with monks from the Shaolin Temple in China, the British artist Anthony Gormley and the Polish composer Szymon Brzóska to create a dynamic and explosive show.

Larbi travelled to the Shaolin Temple in May of last year, taking with him the spirit of Bruce Lee, an interest in Martial Arts and Gormley's concept of large wooden boxes as sculptural counterpoints to the human bodies. The boxes were large enough for the monks to stand inside and functioned as building blocks for the set. Through being carried and pushed around the stage they worked as performers in their own right, transforming into moving symbols of roads, walls, boats, cities, fortresses and temples.

The combination of Larbi's choreography and the monk's acrobatic movements through the internal and external spaces of the boxes is amazingly dramatic. The performance melds the spirit of Buddhism, Kung Fu and western contemporary dance into a fluid journey of spiritual and physical symbolism.

Sutra will travel to Barcelona, 16, 17, 18 July and Athens, 26 July.

Simboli Zodiac Posters

by Ami Kealoha

simboliAquarius.jpg simboliCancer.jpg simboligemini.jpg

With their offbeat colorways and swirling psychedelic imagery, it isn't any wonder that Paul Smith snatched up design duo Joe and Gerry Simboli's Zodiac posters and used them in his collections awhile back. Designed in the late '60s, the shapes and lines have a modern feel making for the perfect way to add a little neo-boho to your decor.

Posters are 24" x 36", signed by the artists, sell for $175 each and are extremely limited in quantity. Contact bradford [at] bradfordshellhammer [dot] com to order one.
