Globe-Trotter x J. Crew Luggage

by Jacob Resneck

jcrewglobetrotter1.jpg jcrewglobetrotter.jpg

J. Crew has been making some surprisingly well-executed forays into the luxury market as of late and the latest such unexpected product is a collaboration with the British maker of hand-made traveling cases and trunks, Globe-Trotter. Though the New York-based clothier isn't the first to team up with Globe-Trotter (see the Conran shop's 2007 offering), their partnership goes further introducing a six-piece line of luggage in a gorgeous black and tan colorway with gold hardware.

We like the Globe-Trotter Centenary 21" trolley case, retailing for $1,800, which like rest of the Globe-Trotter’s line, has been designed to withstand the weight of a one-ton elephant and the rigors of travel. Made in England, it's available (along with the other pieces) in limited quantities from J. Crew.

World Science Festival 2008

by Max Gold

Brian Greene is a brilliant physicist who is notorious for the Superstring theory and also because he makes the most mind-bending and fascinating physics concepts accessible and engaging for the average reader (check out his Ted Talk). Combine that talent with the most cutting-edge scientific thinkers and performers of our day and you get the first ever World Science Festival, which will be held in New York City from 29 May-1 June 2008. Among the list of over 40 discussions, exhibitions and performances we've selected a few that promise to be particularly mind-expanding.

On Thursday, 29 May, be sure to check out "Humanity Now/Humanity Next," featuring acclaimed neuroscientist, Vilayanur Ramachandran, and futurist/author Ray Kurzweil. The two will explore the way human brain structures have allowed for the development of special abilities and what lies ahead with artificial intelligence.

Also, be sure not to miss the unique fusion of science and storytelling with "Toil and Trouble... Stories of Experiments Gone Wrong." The New York-based storytelling collective, The Moth, teams up with renowned scientists and writers to tell the tales of crazy science gone awry. It should make for some interesting stories.

And on Friday, May 30, check out "The Sixth Extinction," a lecture which promises to explore the bizarre life forms that have existed or might soon exist on Earth.

Tickets are available at World Science Festival.

Linden Agave Singlefin Surfboard

by Tim Yu

lindenagaveboardsinglefin.jpg

Surfing, more than many other sports, is both more closely connected to and heavily dependent on the health of the planet, yet the industry's been slow to get away from the use of toxic and harmful materials in boards. This is mostly due to the fact that untraditional materials just don't perform as well. A great eco-friendly alternative without compromising board performance is Gary Linden's Custom Agave Singlefin.

Made from dead Agave harvested from SoCal deserts, it's a sustainable and extremely durable material that provides a bit of flexion. Each agave board takes over 60 hours to shape making for a smooth ride in a variety of conditions. More importantly, Agave is a light material that greatly outperforms the heavy wood boards of the past making people rethink the wood surfboard.

Crafting surfboards since 1967, all are custom and original productions. For more info visit Linden Surfboards. Price of the Agave Singlefin is available upon request.

T-Dream T-Shirts

by Ami Kealoha

tdreamaldorossi.jpg tdreamventuri.jpg

T-Dream is Alessi's collection of tees featuring graphics designed by eight world-renowned designers produced to benefit the children's rights organization Amici dei Bambini. Designers include Robert Venturi (pictured left) Martí Guixé, Michael Graves, Philippe Starck and Aldo Rossi (pictured right). The designs themselves, all represented in dream bubbles, range from the fanciful like Rossi's Leaning Tower of Pisa Teapot, to the more literal, like Alessandro Mendini's diagram of Alessi's control center.

The shirts are available for $38 each from Unica Home.

Format Wallpaper ReUp

by Max Gold

JBClassics.jpg

Format Magazine recently released a wave of over 70 fresh wallpapers celebrating its 40th issue. Many are recycled covers from past issues but our favorites transform sneakers from commodity to an artistic medium.

For example, "SNKR City" plays off of Frank Miller's graphic novel/superhero aesthetic, placing an eye-catching pair of Nikes into a noir setting. We also like how the 40th Anniversary issue cover, "JB Classics," references the beloved short French film, "Le Ballon Rouge." A different take, "Brook Olivares" keeps with Format's interest in urban art but deviates a bit in that it provides a more impressionistic image.

There's plenty of variety and even if you're not a sneaker head there's a lot to choose from, so have a look at Format Magazine.
