De Grisogono Meccanico dG by Doug Black

watch3.jpg

Contrary to its appearance, the Meccanico dG has no digital components. Below the more conventional analog portion of the two-timezone watch is a numerical display driven by the intricate interplay of 651 strictly mechanical components. Numbers are formed by the motion of 23 cams, which are connected to gears and a synchronization system.

To prove it, the watch's back features a transparent dial plate that affords close scrutiny of the timepiece's inner workings. Billed as the world's most complicated watch, its creation marks the 50th birthday of the Geneva-based company De Grisogono.

The Meccanico dG comes in four styles (red gold, titanium-and-gold, titanium-and-platinum and titanium-and-rubber) and is waterproof to 100 feet. Although pricing information and availability are forthcoming, it won't be easy to claim one of the mere 177 produced.

Max Bill Chronoscope for Junghans
In 1962 Swiss artist Max Bill (1908-1994) created a few mechanical watches for the German company Junghans. Reissued in recent years, most were and are very simple-looking, too understated for my personal tastes. But this rare Chronoscope model has a certain something. Its minimalism is just plain attractive. Apparently this particular version isn't sold anymore and the only one I could find was here...
An Interview with Mihara Yasuhiro
For the past seven years Japanese designer Mihara Yasuhiro has been collaborating with Puma on a line of wildly inventive sneakers that has become known—with features like patterns, drips, fur, studs, stripes and metallics—for adding a true avant-garde edge to shoes. The current Spring/Summer 2007 collection marks Mihara's fifth collection with Puma that includes limited edition re-issues of the MY-1 Peace, featuring a variation...
Kronotype MDQS-2 Chronograph
Kronotype, an independent watch brand, features some extreme looking chronographs. Most interesting to me is the MDQS-2 (V1) with long banked sides that sink into the deeply recessed dial, reminding me of the deadly arena of "Rollerball," the 1975 film that envisions a future where a violent futuristic roller-derby sport replaces war. Gotta love James Caan in the seventies. The hour indexes of white...
