Cool Hunting
Generally, I resent being tricked by household objects masquerading as something they're not. That said, I'm hard pressed to get mad at this unassuming pile of stones. What appears to be solid rock is actually a cushioned wool rug. Each "stone" of the Pebble Carpet is hand-crafted of merino wool and attached with an internal cord. Designed by Ronel Jordaan in Johannesberg, South Africa, the Pebble Carpet is distributed through Be Sweet, a website that aims to bring a wider market to a group of socially-conscious designers.
Another beguiling example is the Long Life Light, which, if not for the tell-tale electrical cord, could be mistaken for a quart of milk. Encased the iconic lampshade is an extended-life bulb, creating a environmentally-sound, fully-functional lamp. It's made by Florence-based design studio Anatomic Factory and debuted earlier this year at the Stockholm Furniture Fair.
The Long Life Light is available in their shop. You can buy the Pebble Carpet on Be Sweet's web boutique. See also: Livingstones

The Sip of Light takes your average book light and adds some stealth and ingenuity. Created by Korean designer Sung-kyu Nam, it's basically an illuminating straw outfitted with an internal battery and single LED light, which can be stabilized with any cup or glass. Currently in prototype stage, the lower portion of the straw casing contains the power supply, the head holds the light...
Even if you don't have a strange affinity for hospitals, you might like the Lichtinfusion Lamp by Christain Maas. With lights that hang like old-school glass bottles of saline, I love that the IV rubber tubing doubles as the power cord. If I was designing it, I'd add more realistism by adding wheels like real IV systems allowing patients to go for walks. A...
A surefire way to impress that guy or girl you take home Friday night is to stack scholarly books on your bedside table, as if you casually dropped them there after breezing through some weighty tome on relational aesthetics or quantum theory. For those without the time or brain capacity, you may consider the Poetry Nightstand, designed by Marian Lassak. Although it's not a...
Named "Beat" for their hand-beaten production method, Tom Dixon's series of lamps and vessels is quickly becoming an iconic part of his oeuvre. After years of working in relative obscurity, Dixon is now something like England's national poster child of design. From his massive light giveaways during London's design week to limited edition copper-clad chairs and private member's club interiors, the designer seems to...
The Museum of Modern Art's popular design store added some clever new items recently, all of which aimed to help you further personalize your personal space. The Exhibit Your Art Pad (pictured at right) is a stack of sticky note pages that feature a stylized blue frame on the border. As such, anything you write in the center—whether a doodle or detailed painting—is immediately...
I was walking in the Marais with some friends the other day and we were all drawn into ToolsGalerie by a glowing light. The “Slow Glow Lamp” (€330) by Next Architects and Aura Luiz Melis for Droog design stops you in your tracks. The lamp is a giant light bulb filled with saturated soy oil and a small light bulb. As the light bulb heats...
