Cool Hunting
Slightly more grown-up these days, the fifth issue of Wooooo magazine nevertheless continues to further its own special approach to journalism with 11 interviews of various figures from the worlds of art, music, film and skateboarding, including big names, like David Byrne and Parker Posey, rounded out by lesser-known characters, like artist Carlos Valencia. As with previous issues, the main draw is founding editor Jason Crombie's outlandish interview technique, with topics ranging from the hilarious to inane. More often than not, conversations gravitate towards the genitals and other things entirely unrelated to the interviewee's profession. For example, pro skater Jerry Hsu's interview is exclusively related to his missing cat.
Crombie (also a freelance writer) started Wooooo in 2004 as a pocket-sized interview magazine light on images and avoiding the usual declarations of adoration and plugs for upcoming projects. Occasionally highlighting unseen characteristics and often catching interviewees off guard, the result is completely refreshing. Do we really need to know if girls like David Byrne's hairy arms? Probably not. But it’s strangely gratifying to see him squirm.
You can order issue #5 (as well as back issues) on the Wooooo website or find it in a number of bookshops around the world.

WAV is a heady mix of relatively unknown music and left-of-center politics, published out of Los Angeles, California. Its most recent issue, with a profile of DJ Rap (referred to as "arguably the world's #1 female DJ") and a piece about the other video directing Gondry (Olivier, Michel's geeky bro), there's plenty in its pages to keep the avid culture hound's attention. A casual...
For years, Ghostly International, the indie juggernaut of Avant-Pop music, has been redefining the record industry with innovative collaborations and a brand awareness that puts most labels to shame. On 21 April, the fruits of their latest collaborative efforts paid off in the release of "Ghostly Swim", a 19-song compilation made exclusively for Adult Swim and available for free download. The kicker? Ghostly mascots...
Melbourne's Cut Copy is the hottest electro act out of Australia right now. We spoke to Mitchell Brown from the group to get the lowdown. Does Melbourne still have a dynamic creative scene? I think it really does—there's no shortage of people in Melbourne doing amazingly cool things creatively, whether it's music, art, fashion, or design. There's a lot going on. Also, for music,...
If anybody needs proof of how useless the recording industry has become, look no further than TheSwimmingPools. In the past few years, the NYC-based duo has recorded three albums and produced a slew of videos using only a computer in their East Village apartment. Comprised of Christophe Doloire and Daniel Smith, the group plays a brooding electronica that feels as if it would've been...
New York-based Esopus hits newsstands only twice a year, but take a peek inside and you'll understand why. With a CD of new music in each issue, specialty papers and a hand-crafted feel, this ad-free magazine of writing and artwork strives to create a place for "unfiltered" and "un-mediated creativity." Yes, please! There's a part of us that wants to give each new issue...
Last fall, we were impressed by a series of 99 ink-and-paper drawings at the Documenta 12 exhibition in Kassel, Germany. Each drawing depicted an acute fear and included a short, handwritten explanation (like, "A man is already in heaven. It's kind of nice and calm although he still keeps his life-long fear of dying one day," at left) scrunched in the bottom. The concise...
