Lauren Molina by Ted Cahill

lmalbumcover.jpg

If you're looking for a little sunshine to brighten up a cold winter day, check out the delightful debut album from indie pop singer-songwriter, Lauren Molina. An accomplished Broadway actress currently playing the role of Johanna in the national tour of Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd," Molina is a veritable one-woman orchestra, whose innovative arrangements for Doo-Be-Doo have her playing cello, ukulele, guitar, accordion, Wurlizter and finger piano. Her songs are playful, heartfelt and even environmentally conscious "Marriott on Wheels," where she sings about the absurdity of Hummers in the city while riding her yellow bike.

Surprisingly, Molina remains unsigned and self-released; Doo-Be-Doo is available from CD Baby or from iTunes.

Ok Go Backyard Video
As described by Ira Glass, Ok Go "is like a boy band that got seduced by Queen and wound up in college instead of Orlando." I just stumbled upon this video for their new single A Million Ways which proves they bring intelligence and wit along with sly synchronization. A little bit indie, a little bit pop, the single has the makings of a...
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is the five-piece Brooklyn band making internet waves with their 80s-tinged indie pop. Synth melodies, warm basslines, and tight backbeats are a perfect foundation for lead singer Alec Ounsworth's David Byrne-esque lilt. Plus their self-released album is making the term "independent" meaningful again. Thanks to Teva for the heads-up on the dreamy new eponymous album available from Insound. You...
Phoenix Rising
It’s funny when people who like music, but aren’t necessarily totally into music, inform me about a new band. Such was the case last week when Josh, the editor of this website, wrote to ask if I have ever heard of this group called Phoenix. I emailed him back with some sort of smart-ass response that went something like, “Have I ever heard of...
Take a Ride on The Adam Brown
While up in Montreal last weekend, I had the chance to meet some of the city’s movers and shakers in the music scene. Someone told me about this young singer/songwriter named Adam Brown and after hearing a couple of his tracks, I knew I had to meet him. Adam and I had lunch one day at the famed Schwartz’s Deli on St. Laurent in...
