Fernanda Cohen: War of Words
by Lost At E Minor
We're big fans of Fernanda Cohen's work. The Brooklyn-based illustrator just completed a new series called "War of Words" which has received two silver medals from the Society of Illustrators of New York and Los Angeles and will be featured in HOW International Design in March. Of the series, Cohen says, "War of Words focuses on the dynamic behind ten different universal arguments: politics, love, childhood, sports, customer service, religion, family, protests, friendship and self, because in the history of human communication and interaction, we've always argued over the same things, in a wide range of different cultures and languages." Fray Issue 1: Busted!
by Doug Black
Busted! marks the first print edition of Fray.com’s long-running series of first-person true stories. Launched in the internet wilderness of 1996, it served the novel role of personal storytelling forum, eventually expanding to a series of live events and albums. With the new millennium came the inevitable over-saturation of blogs and online journals, pushing Fray into an indefinite hiatus, only to return last month as an attractive, bound journal demanding a spot on your bookshelf.
The inaugural issue features 20 bite-sized stories interspersed with original photos and illustration. The tales keep to the general theme of getting in trouble and run the gamut from a drunk driving arrest to a dispatch from the Jena Six protests. Told through casual recollections, the stories are more immediate and personal than what you’d expect from a quarterly journal.
You can read a few stories on their website, or order a subscription. Issue 1 goes for $15, and comes inside a printed cloth bag.
Lauren Molina
by Ted Cahill
If you're looking for a little sunshine to brighten up a cold winter day, check out the delightful debut album from indie pop singer-songwriter, Lauren Molina. An accomplished Broadway actress currently playing the role of Johanna in the national tour of Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd," Molina is a veritable one-woman orchestra, whose innovative arrangements for Doo-Be-Doo have her playing cello, ukulele, guitar, accordion, Wurlizter and finger piano. Her songs are playful, heartfelt and even environmentally conscious "Marriott on Wheels," where she sings about the absurdity of Hummers in the city while riding her yellow bike.
Surprisingly, Molina remains unsigned and self-released; Doo-Be-Doo is available from CD Baby or from iTunes.
Kate Moross Tees
by Doug Black
Barely into her 20s, designer/illustrator Kate Moross has a client list as long as some established design firms. You might recognize her distinctive work from Vice and Nylon magazines or U.K. bands like Klaxons and the Maccabees. She cut her teeth designing flyers for London shows three years ago with a penchant for throwback psychedelic graphics and lettering. Her more recent work favors a tight, geometric style, even when hand-drawn.
Her latest offering is a limited run of silver foil t-shirts in white and black. They’re unisex, limited to 100 and can be purchased in her online shop. You can also find the first release on her new record label Isomorphs, which was somehow able to commission original Kate Moross cover art. There's some more work after the jumpAudrey Kawasaki: Mayoi Michi
by Brian Fichtner
“Mayoi Michi” is a solo exhibit for Audrey Kawasaki that opened over the weekend and runs through next month at the Copro Nason Gallery in Santa Monica, California. The exhibition will highlight a new collection of Audrey's ethereal oil on wood paintings, along with a series of rare giclee prints on archival paper. (Click images for detail.) Previously noted on Cool Hunting in December 2005, Kawasaki has met with tremendous demand exhibiting in solo and group shows over the past two years. To wit, all 17 paintings featured in this new exhibit have been pre-sold.
