Cool Hunting
Wallpaper unveiled its “Design Awards” series recently with some interesting results. Though we're not sure about their cred since they proclaimed Los Angeles “Best City” (air quality and gun violence were obviously not strong criterias), otherwise the periodical (along with judges that include Tadao Ando, Wong Kar-wai and Donatella Versace) really pulled it off.
Best domestic appliance goes to the "Katamari 01" speaker by Giyanze (pictured above left) which despite its sleek, very Japanese design, backs an acoustic punch.
Tokyo-based designer Tokujin Yoshioka takes home the Best furniture designer award for his ingenious work for Moroso Performance Products in Milan. (This on the heels of winning Designer of the Year at this year's Design Miami Pictured at left. Photo courtesy of Keetja Allard.)
Best new private house is intriguing. Architects Makoto Takei and Chie Nabeshima created the Ring House, a weekend house less than 200 miles from Tokyo that's no minka (traditional Japanese farmhouse). Their creation is nothing less than a mini-tower of glass and wood that stands three storeys tall amid thick foliage, offering a panoramic view of its idyllic surroundings.

Monumental. There really is no other word for them. The first furniture series from British architect David Adjaye awed the crowds when London's Albion Gallery debuted it at Design Miami last week. They serve to further erode any remaining...

Among the best (and a great gift to surprise the favorite architect on your list) is PIN-UP, a brand-new magazine that plays with the idea of architecture as eye candy and aims to go "behind the clothes" of architects to figure out what makes them tick. PIN-UP features articles on Jurgen Mayer H., Zaha...

With the original mission of bringing architecture and design to a savvy New York audience, this independent has only changed course to expand its breadth and become a national publication. To get a full sense of who's going to be there, check out Metropolis Magazine's...
An extensive retrospective of the work of famed German modernist architect Egon Eiermann is currently underway in Berlin (and will be moving to Nuremberg next). Celebrating his birth 100 years ago, the show documents his buildings, including the German embassay in Washington, D.C., the Parliamentary Office Tower in Bonn, and his sleek and practical interiors and furniture designs. Perhaps more than any other architect...
