Kumi Yamashita by Lost At E Minor

kumi.jpg

If we had a third thumb, we'd give Kumi Yamashita three thumbs up. The Japanese artist creates stunning visual effects with lighting and simple forms, like letters of the alphabet, children's blocks and shoeprints. Yamashita finds the rare balance between beauty and brains.

Nebraska-based artist Jake Gillespie makes huge graphite-and-chalk drawings and black and white murals. His sparse lines (often just gestural) and dark, smudgy fields of color make for expressive, impermanent-seeming images that read like thoughts and memories scribbled in a notebook....
Painter Ann Toebbe
Ann Toebbe's paintings of domestic scenes and assorted interiors are quite inspirational, giving the feeling of living in a geometric, melancholy collage. The Chicago-based artist's work shares some of the color, shapes and flatness of Christoph Ruckhäberle, but she leaves out the people and weirdness. In each piece, intricate patterns and simple forms clutter the plane, which make up a uniquely one-dimensional composition....

Her series, Hunting and Gaming, explores the "nature of sinister play." Prager paints "starkly-lit scenes of surrealistic moments in daily life; untangling holiday decorations, playing with old toys, driving or chatting. But her odd theatrical arrangements suggest something creepy going on behind...
