Cool Hunting

Last night we got our first look at the new North Face NSE Collection, a special limited collaboration with the Japanese sportswear manufacturer Goldwin. Inspired by the white birch forests that thrive on the northern island of Japan, the centerpiece of the collection is a new camo print featuring images of the birch forests. The first of the NSE special collector's edition, which will be announced annually, also includes puffy jackets, reversibles, hoodies, bags and pants.
Engineered by working closely with snowboarders and skiers, all pieces highlight the latest technical innovations in insulation, construction, waterproofing and breathability. The limited U.S. release will hit stores on 8 December 2007 only at the The North Face SoHo store, HUF and Alife. To see more images, continue reading.

No matter the conditions, the limited edition Zeal Optics Link Spherical goggles I tried out this past weekend will have you covered. New for 2008, they feature the world's first polarized and photochromatic lens. Polarization allows for increased clarity and depth perception, but the lens also changes the level of opacity depending on the light and time of day, adapting to low light and...
This past winter star Japanese designer Hiroshi Fujiwara was always blogging about his epic snowboarding trips all over the world. The snow-covered old growth terrain was always so inviting but I also took note of the brightly colored minimalist jackets that he and his crew would wear and wondered what brand they were sporting. Through a Neil Harmon photo essay on Honeyee called Still...
I used to make fun of people who wore denim on the slopes, but Burton recently made it more functional with this first edition Gore-Tex LTD Grail Denim Jacket and Pant.Denim alone is probably the worst thing you could wear in cold and wet conditions, however an exclusive collaboration with Gore-Tex gives Burton the sole rights for two years to use their technology that...
Instead of fumbling with oversized trailmaps on the chairlift, Podpro offers free downloadable maps which you can view on your iPhone or iPod. Offering access to a few dozen resorts in the U.S and Canada like Aspen, Alta, Mammoth and Whistler Blackcomb, you can now plan your descent with a few clicks or zooms. The Podpro service also features RSS feeds of weather conditions...
In between watching 1080s galore at the U.S. Open a couple weeks backs, I had the chance to demo some of Burton's gear due out for the 2009 season. Most noteworthy is their Infinite Channel System (ICS) and Extra Sensory Technology (EST)—an integrated board and binding system. Reducing the binding mount to two screws, thus eliminating the plate from under your boot. Debuted for...
We've all heard of people drinking their own urine to survive out in the wild when there is no access to water. Though urine is sterile and (usually) safe to drink, using it as plant fertilizer may be more palatable option to most. The smart folks at EAWAG Aquatic Research in Switzerland have developed a way to extract the phosphorus and nitrogen from urine...
