The Lovers by Leonora Oppenheim

loverscover.jpg

There's nothing like a late night radio discovery. On the brink of sleep Monday, I was jolted wide awake by the witty, sexy, upbeat chansons of The Lovers' lovemaking session on the Rob Da Bank show on Radio 1.

A little bit saucy, a little bit kitsch, a little bit tongue-in-cheek and oh so very very French, they make Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin seem chaste! An on-air cover of The Cure's "Lovecats" was suitably smooth with a Bossa Nova beat and puuuuurrrrring lyrics from Marion Benoist, whose previous incarnation was as a bunny girl. Her partner in crime is Fred de Fred, who has been described as a rock n' roll gypsy.

Based in Sheffield, U.K., their overt Frenchness has an interesting twist. In fact, several of their songs were co-written by none other than Sheffield native Jarvis Cocker, who, by the way, now lives in Paris. Quelle Franglais!

The Lovers by The Lovers is released on Gut Records in the U.K. You can listen to their songs on their MySpace page.

This British singer-songwriter, working under the name Bat For Lashes, has shown herself to be an amazing creative force on her debut album Fur and Gold. The remarkable album was recognized last month with a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize. And her recent single "What's A Girl To Do" was mentioned on...
Monkey: Journey to the West
A fitting way to open Manchester's first-ever international festival, "Monkey: Journey to the West" is Damon Albarn's and Jamie Hewlett's (co-creators of Gorillaz) stage adaptation of an ancient Chinese legend . Dubbed a "circus opera" complete with 45 Chinese acrobats and Shaolin monks (some strung from wires), it's very likely to be an entertaining and amusing collaboration between these British producer/artists and their Chinese counterparts....
Nostalgia 77: Everything Under The Sun
Swirling waves of jangling bells, shells, bamboo and other eclectic sounds weave a soothing texture behind the chords, melodies and words of Everything Under The Sun, the latest record from prolific Oxford, England native Benedic Lamdin, aka Nostalgia 77. His “Nostalgia” is for the Soul-, Spiritual-, Cosmic-, and Free-Jazz of the 60s and 70s. And his music fuses an homage to these classic forms...
Nouvelle Vague: Late Night Tales
Two of Cool Hunting's musical favorites combine here, as Nouvelle Vague become the latest artists to liberate gems from their record collection for the consistently excellent Late Night Tales series. It's a perfect match and unsurprisingly, the record isn't so much laid-back as horizontal. Starting with the falsetto of Jerry Dammers set to the ska of The Special AKA, it floats past Glen Campbell...
