Now Play It

by Ami Kealoha

nowplayittutorial.jpg nowplayitDaveRowland.jpg

Whenever I get a tune in my head that I can't get rid of, not only do I end up humming along for hours, but I get an uncontrollable urge to bash it out on my axe - sorry, play it on my guitar. Most other players will no doubt agree, which is why Now Play It is a welcome addition to my bookmarks.

While there have been videos of amateurs playing their favorite tunes on YouTube for ages, this British website takes it to the next level. Around 300 video tutorials are available for guitar, bass and drums and are given a difficulty rating from 1 to 5. A lot just feature the chord shapes shown over the top of the music video, or a house tutor showing you what to do. Rather impressively though, many of them are taught by the actual artists themselves. Cough up, and Blur drummer Dave Rowntree (above right) will teach you how to play along to "Song 2," or KT Tunstall will patiently show you how to play "Suddenly I See" just like she did.

Tutorials start at £1.99 and are iTunes and iPod compatible.

Uninsu(red) Shirt

by Wendy Dembo

uninsuredt1.jpg uninsuredt.jpg

Last year when the Gap came out with their (red) campaign, the first word that popped into my head, was insu(red)/uninsu(red). They did a few kind of ironic shirts like bo(red) and ti(red), but I wondered why they didn’t make an uninsu(red) shirt.

With insurance looking like it's going to be the touch point for the 2008 Presidential election, I thought that making these shirts could hopefully get some uninsured kids to think about their need for health insurance, perhaps even the need for universal health care.

I ran into Jeff Staple of the Reed Space at a party and told him about my idea. He thought that it was a good idea too. It took some time, but starting today the shirts will be available at the Reed Space. We hope that they will start a much-needed dialogue.

Duke Magazine

by Lost At E Minor

Duke3.jpg Duke2.jpg

In the latest issue of the funny and offensive Duke Magazine, the all-guns-blazing Sydney kids behind the fashion bent publication launch well-argued attacks against the green recycle bags as fashion, Tsubi ruining op-shopping for everyone and some woman who collects rubbish to add to the junkyard within her home. Yes, this is hard-hitting journalism at it's best.
