Like Legos, shrinky sheets (you may remember them as ShrinkyDinks) are a grade-school era toy that's maybe even better for grown-ups. ReadyMade magazine is staging a comeback of the material with the introduction of it into their online store.
With a little inspiration and an oven, the 8½x11 sheets turn brighter, as well as shrink, harden and thicken, transforming into a key chain, fruit bowl, lamp shade or anything else you dream up. With the right finesse, they could even be used for simple prototyping. Plus, making things mini is pretty much always a good idea in our book.
Available either for use with pen and ink or in an ink-jet printer, the sheets come four to a pack (two each of clear and white) for $8 and $12 respectively from ReadyMade.

Often considered a marketing invention to help boost sales in an otherwise slow economic period for retailers, Valentine's Day needn't be another excuse to express love through our capalitistic, consumeristic ways. There are plenty of options to give without hitting the mall, so this year CH decided to put together a list of homemade Valentines gifts (and kits). If you're short on time and/or...
Betsy Ross, Aimee Dolby's line of chic user-friendly clothing patterns, is one of the most recent additions to the growing DIY institution. Thanks to O.G.s like ReadyMade magazine (I'm a regular contributor), new kid Make, and the Renegade Craft Fair, modern crafty products like Dolby's have an established market. Her stylish kits, which include two skirts, a blouse, a dress, pants, and a tote,...
Part DIY, part inspiration for the future of fashion, Project Runway (and Cool Hunting Video) alum Diana Eng's recent book "Fashion Geek" is filled with creative ideas on how to tech up your wardrobe. Our personal favorite is the digital locket, which takes the usually drab digital keychain and gives it a sparkly new purpose in five easy steps. The result is an embellished necklace...
SomeRightsReserved is the awesome online store of the London-based KithKin design collective. The shop, billed as "a download revolution" features both digital products (such as music and fonts) and directions/instructions for building physical items. There are too many great things to call out here but a few favorites include the origami Graphic Grenade by PostlerFerguson; The Rubbish typefaces by Clare Acheson, and the RepRap...
"Squares, Checks and Grids," the newest title in the Communicating with Pattern series from Rotovision, is an homage to the most linear of shapes. Serving as a sourcebook for designers, the book features 850 inspirational images of squares, checks and grids in a variety of contexts. Dozens of examples of houndstooth, tartans, argyles, ginghams and western plaids explore checks in the context of textiles....
