Letter by Letter: An Alphabetical Miscellany
The 26 letters of the Roman alphabet operate almost subconsciously once ingrained in young minds. The resulting familiarity proves invaluable in life, but also makes it difficult to step back and examine letters as standalone objects. In "Letter by Letter", designer/calligrapher/artist Laurent Pflughaupt aims to do just that with an exhaustive overview of each letter in the alphabet. He begins with a historical look...

Rockwell T-Shirts
Rising from the underground ranks, Amsterdam-based artist Parra Rockwell's new tees are the latest proof of his current spot in the limelight. The shirts feature the same bright, unusual palette that made top companies like Nike and Volkswagen hire him, also landing the rising artist gallery shows in recent years. In fact, Rockwell's first NYC show this past summer at Reed Space was a...

365 Days of Design
Keeping a daily journal is not as easy as it sounds-- I go in spurts, weeks of writing in my book, sketching in my black book, and then sudden dry spells. Micah Bauer's graphic journal has inspired me to keep documenting my ideas. He had pretty strict rules to abide by though-- one composition a day, each day, for 365 days straight. His compositions...

E&Y: Greenland
Just steps from the infamous 10 Corso Como, the Japanese brand E&Y mounted a modest show at Galleria Antonia Jannone under the name "Greenland." The title was supposed to reference both global warming and the changing nature of the namesake country. I didn't quite get the connection between their products and sustainability, especially considering the wanton (albeit well-designed) use of paper and cardboard in...

Burgues Script
Every once in a while a typeface makes you step back and appreciate the letter forms from the words they spell. Argentinean type designer Alejandro Paul was recently recognized by the Type Director's Club for the superior craftsmanship of his Burgues Script. With its extensive set of glyphs, the script takes on an organic sense of fluidity normally found only in hand drawn lettering....

Band ID
Some might consider rock music a safe respite from corporate branding, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Bands spend huge numbers of hours and dollars perfecting their logos, which serve as much more than just album cover designs. In "Band ID: The Ultimate Book of Band Logos", Bodhi Oser collects the most distinctive logos in Rock, Hip-Hop, Metal, Pop and Reggae from...
