by Ami Kealoha

PictoBrowser1.jpg PictoBrowser2.jpg

PictoBrowser is an indispensable freeware web application written by New York interactive designers Diego Bauducco and Carlos Gomez. It allows users to browse and display images from Flickr on any web page in a stylish, crisp flash-based interface. The plug-in enhances the functionality of Web 2.0 media sites like Flickr by providing a simple means to display photo sets on their own blog or homepage. To get started just click on the "Info" button on the bottom right corner of any Pictobrowser. (Sample images: bjarne*)

Diego was nice enough to share a little bit about the context and the creation of PictoBrowser when asked, we've included his response below.

Icky Thump Giveaway

by Seth Brau

wstripes1.jpg wstripes2.jpg

By now you should have already heard the White Stripes' new album Icky Thump. It's just classic White Stripes rock 'n' roll and we can't get enough. We also have a sweet White Stripes Icky Thump prize package to give away to one lucky soul. Yeah, we're talking limited edition Icky Thump t-shirt, poster, pin and of course the album.

Here's the catch: to win you have to tell us what an Icky Thump is. Follow the contact link at the bottom of the page, select "Icky Thump Giveaway" from the pull-down menu and let us know before Monday, 23 July 2007. There's no right answer but we'll choose the most original. Pictures might help, or maybe we don't want to look at your Icky Thumps.

Update: We have a winner! We received plenty of disgusting answers and even more explanations of where the term actually comes from, but we thought this was the best because it made us giggle (without completely vomiting): An icky thump is the terrible, rhythmic pounding you hear when your parents are having sex in an adjacent room. Add extra ickiness points if there's any audible dirty talk.

Rojo®egal

by Phuong-Cac Nguyen

ROJO_egal_daily.jpg

Rojo Magazine's in the midst of celebrating the launch of its newest issue, Rojo®egal, a weighty edition packed cover-to-cover with photographs, illustrations and graphic design pieces from over 30 international artists. Printed on quality paper stock, the text-less, quarterly magazine fits in next to the art and design books on your bookshelf.

Rojo operates from both Barcelona and São Paulo, using those cities as a base to maintain its elaborate network of 500 artists who they often call upon to contribute to projects commissioned from big-time clientele, ranging from one-off concept mags for Nike and design work for Smart to inviting artists to hang work in its Rojo Artspace gallery in Barcelona. (The current show features Tofer.) But other than providing paychecks to their bevy of associated artists, the creative agency promotes the artists' works through limited-edition books focused entirely on the artist.

The agency's planning to open a São Paulo art gallery in the next few months.

Flavours of Lakhoum Coffee Portraits

by Lost At E Minor

FlavoursofLakhoumcup.jpg

Look closely at the froth of this latte and you'll see a portrait carved out in the grains and milk. Served at a Richmond café, Flavours of Lakhoum, it's taking the art of coffee to a new level.

Turkish inspired—"Lakhoum" means 'delight' in Turkish—they offer a range of Middle Eastern-inspired foods that get great reviews. In the end, it's the baristas, who can whip up these portraits in around 45 seconds, that draw the crowd. It's almost too nice to drink.

I Met The Walrus

by Tim Yu

Imetthewalrus.jpg Imetthewalrus1.jpg

Around the time of Lennon's 1969 "bed-in" phase a 14 year-old Beatles fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon's Toronto hotel room for a little chat. Thirty-five years later Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative of this event by marrying the traditional pen sketches of James Braithwaite with digital illustration by Alex Kurina in a spell-binding animated short, showcasing Lennon's boundless wit and timeless message. When asked for commentary about the film and it's festival tour dates so far, Braithwaite said, "it has allowed both Josh and I the unique opportunity to watch Busta Rhymes and eat a grilled cheese sandwich while standing at the cash register of a diner in Hollywood."

It's hard to explain, but watch the trailer online at I Met the Walrus.
