Japanese-born and Barcelona-based, product designer Hiroshi Tsunoda recently launched a new brand called Design Code. We first mentioned Hiroshi's distinctive lighting designs in reviewing the design store L'appartement, where he exhibited last year. Design Code is a collection of Tsunoda's well-known designs such as Flamp and Table Emotions (below right), as well as new products such as the beautiful Folklore tea light holders. (Pictured below left.)
We particularly love Tsunoda's new Joyn design (above right). These small hexagonal modular pieces can be joined together to create a dividing screen of limitless dimensions. This seems very much influenced by the Bouroullec brothers' similar Algae and Twigs designs for Vitra but Tsunoda brings his own sense of simplicity and geometry to the concept. What's more, Design Code's products are ecologically made; they are all lightweight, made from recyclable materials, mostly paper and plastic, and manufactured in Barcelona. Design Code products can be bought online from Vinçon.

Using macabre imagery to form an eerily symbolic sculptural piece, Jun Takahashi of Undercover joined forces with P.A.M. to create the Shade Lamp. The scene depicts a tree growing out of (or through?) a skull in a cemetery somewhere with the branches (fittingly) holding the shade. For mood lighting, I like the green and gold eyes, but my favorite part of the lamp has...
Bagjack, well-known for their utility bags in Europe and Japan, collaborated with our friends at Beinghunted to create the 1-B Messenger bag back in 2005. This year, they reissued it for the holidays, but bigger! In fact, it fits a shoe box plus some. The innovative three-point strap system enables one pull tightening of the shoulder strap, perfect for when you're on your bike....
Housing a speaker on either end, the MS0801 is a single vibrational speaker that has the capability to fill a room in stereo. (You can get a pair if you want surround sound.) Made from wood, the cylindrical shape also enhances acoustics. No matter how loud I turned up the volume, the bass never distorted and always sounded clean without dominating the spectrum. In...
Worst part about throw pillows and cushions? Sure they're a good head rest, but they muffle sound and make hearing the TV hard. Enter the Lounging Pillow. This cube-shaped cotton/poly cushion has holes in each of its six sides. When you plop your noggin on it for some serious coach potato action, sound can enter through any of the four unobstructed open spaces. Meaning?...
Karl Escritt is a Kyoto-based graphic artist who's been quietly making a name for himself as an accomplished designer of flyers, posters and t-shirts for the underground music scene in this Englishman's adopted Japan. Recently, Escritt has made a foray as a performance artist as a live painter. He crafts his artwork over Japanese electronica dance music and remixes the final product to show...
So many fashions jump the Hello Kitty nostalgia bandwagon sometimes known in less-polite circles as "Japsploitation" - so it's always reassuring to see a fresh take on Nippon-inspired style that doesn't rehash the age old stereotypes. The new t-shirt line from Moongirl is just one example: It eschews the cutsey stereotypes and instead brings a varied blend of fashionable and original print shirts for...
