Backjumps: The Live Issue #3 by Wendy Dembo

If the Splasher was smart, he or she would escape the heat of NYC and go to Berlin for Backjumps: The Live Issue #3 that started earlier this month and runs through 19 August 2007. Backjumps has become an annual celebration of Street Art, this year featuring installations by artists such as Akim One Nyguyn (aka the King of Berlin graffiti, pictured right and here), Dave the Chimp, Carlos "Mare 139" Rodriguez, the always amazing Mode 2, SKKI, Zevs, and with my favorite tag, Migratory Birds of the Solovei Republic, among many great writers. Workshops, talks, street walks, parties and musical events will be taking place throughout the eight weeks of the Krunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien festival. The goal in some ways is to create a living magazine that discusses street art in terms of urban communication and aesthetics.

Steve Powers, armed with enough gallery and museum credentials to stuff a resume (he's a graffiti writer, author of The Art Of Getting Over and...

Like his mock Air Force 1s and Bapestas, characters such as T-Boy (which was inspired by the...
Eileen Wunderlich and Raf Veulemans
Sharing a fondness for taxidermy, Berlin-based artist Eileen Wunderlich (self-portrait, right) and Belgian Raf Veulemans both have solo shows opening tomorrow, 16 June 2006, at Strychnin gallery in Berlin's central Friedrichshain district. Where Wunderlich often offsets her macabre subjects by posing the dead animals in humorous and even subversive tableaus (picture a hedgehog doing lines off a mirror), Veulemans will add an interactive element...
Spothunters: The Fine Art of Real Estate
The residents of Newton, MA, the safest city in the US, are in for a treat. The New Art Center is the host of this unusual show of graffiti artists who use streets, galleries and publishing to get their views across. Shepard Fairey, Monster Project, Greg Lamarche (designer of the above graphic) and Caleb Neelon are hooking up the art center, housed in a...
