Cool Hunting

It may be warm and bright outside but Beautiful/Decay magazine seems to have been languishing in darkness. Their newest, Issue S, presents a mix of ill–omened themes such as death metal, ritual suicide and the Dark Ages. Hanna Liden's eerie photo series of masked figures (cover image, above left) set in dark swamps only adds to the foreboding effect. Wu-Tang Clan's the RZA wanders out of what he describes as "triple darkness" to talk about philosophy, history and his latest project. The design and layout, inspired by a 1604 manuscript from the Rosicrucian mystic order, and the typeface, Old English Five, a style of calligraphy popular around the 13th to 15th centuries, also follow the theme.
Coupled with the release of Issue S, four new artist–designed t–shirts make their debut as well. The latest in the line of Beautiful/Decay tees that we've come to know and love, they're custom cut, dyed and printed on super soft cotton. This edition of t–shirts frame original works by the likes of Jesse LeDoux, Aaron Noble, Dust La Rock and Jan Kallwejt. Originally an art director/designer for Sub Pop Records and better known for his album cover art, LeDoux's cosmically inspired "Giant Hand" (above right) is my favorite. Take a peek at the all the t-shirts available for $30 here.
Beautiful/Decay will be throwing their Issue S release party this Sunday, 27 May 2007, at Studio B in Brooklyn. Details and flyer after the jump.

In celebration of their newly redesigned site, Beautiful Decay is giving away a three-pack of tees along with their Archive Book to a few CH readers. We've been fans of their artist series shirts from the beginning and the book showcases many of the artists that have been featured in the magazine, so this is definitely a giveaway not to miss. As far as...
Recently added to Beautiful/Decay's line of artist-designed tees, these two new shirts continue the brand's shirt-as-canvas approach. Australian artist Jonathan Nicol's "Conan Shirt" juxtaposes mythological icons, like vampire teeth, a woman wearing an eye patch and a skull, using a palette restricted to gray, yellow, black, and white. For Aya Kato's second Beautiful/Decay effort, the Japanese artist depicts two mermaids and their watery surroundings...
Patagonia's recent t-shirt campaign links a young group of designers with the environmentally-conscious clothing company to produce a line of exclusive shirts. Now they're moving closer towards the gallery scene with a group exhibition set to open tomorrow, 29 March 2008, at Patagonia's Santa Monica store. It will include the work of a couple designers previously featured on CH (Jason Munn and Geoff McFetridge),...
Brevity's Rainbow, a group show opening this Friday, 8 February, at Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn is an attempt to return a sense of intimacy to the spectacle of the art show. Curated by Maxwell Williams of Tokion, the show features over 70 artists interpreting "Lilliputian and the temporal, the specks of dust that make up the world, the fleeting moments of pleasure and pain." The...
Just when we thought they couldn't possibly fit any new music festivals into Barcelona's already beat-filled summers, we hear that the organizers of Summercase, Sinnamon Productions, will introduce Daydream, a new one-day festival. What's more, they secured Radiohead's only date in Spain this year. This is no mean feat since Radiohead's been getting serious about their envrionmental footprint and are loath to tour, restricting...
Oakland, CA's Jason Munn is the one-man machine behind The Small Stakes independent design studio. Along with some beautifully designed and silkscreen posters for such bands as Nada Surf, Death Cab for Cutie, Wilco and Blonde Redhead (to name but a few), he keeps busy with a range of visual designs including book covers and album packaging. Most recently, he's behind a few t-shirt designs...
