by Evan Orensten

The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss is a new book by Claire Nouvian, who was so inspired by what she saw in the deep ocean that she wanted to help raise awareness for all that we don't know about the vast number of species living there (scientists say there are probably around 20 million undiscovered species). She worked with a range of research organizations to curate 220 stunning images, many of creaures never caught on film.

Available at Amazon and other retailers.

Mindful Menus

by Tim Yu

MindfulMenus.jpg

Mindful Menus is a new healthy guide to New York City take-out menus.

Any New Yorker will tell you that take-out and delivery is an integral part of city life and although convenient, it is all too often unhealthy. Taking the nutritional guesswork out of take-out food, two nutritionists modified take-out menus from 20 New York City restaurants in the Upper East and West Side neighborhoods with 10 to 15 selected items from each. The Menus are well designed, easy to read and provide suggestions on what items of a dish to avoid or substitute along with whole "Mindful Meals."

Available for $22 at Foodtrainers. Mindful Menus for Chelsea and Downtown are due out soon.

From the Hips: A Comprehensive, Open-Minded, Uncensored, Totally Honest Guide to Pregnancy, Birth, and Becoming a Parent was written by recent moms and longtime friends Rebecca Odes and Ceridwen Morris when they couldn't find the kind of book they were looking for when they were pregnant and just had their children. It offers tips on everything during pregnancy to integrating the baby into your home. There's also a helpful resource guide to all things baby related.

Designed and illustrated by Rebecca, the book is colorful and well designed, and is a great complement to their blog—The New Mom.

The book came out today, and is available at Amazon and other retailers.

Diesel Puzzle Sneakers

by Leonora Oppenheim

dieselpuzzle.jpgdieselpuzzle1.jpg

Dark, sleek, durable and adaptable. Sounds like the bat mobile and looks rather like it—well, that is if the bat mobile was a shoe. The Puzzle Sneaker is the star feature from the upcoming Diesel Autumn/Winter men’s collection. It's actually more than one new shoe, it’s three in one! This may just be a design gimmick or the start of a whole new way of playing with footwear, either way we think they look pretty funky. We love the idea of having multiple options in one shoe, and we're not just talking about changing the laces. You can move from the minimal low rider style, to the more robust style with detailed stitching, to the full blown hip hop high top, all just with the help of some strategically placed Velcro. While the price tag may look like you are still buying three new pairs of shoes, we appreciate the relative reduction in materials and production time created by this new design. Just one question though…when do the girls get some to play with? Think of all the possible colorways! The Puzzle Shoes will be available in all Diesel stores starting September 2007 for €270.

Tetrode Kink

by Fiona Killackey

tetrodekink1.jpg

Atonal, noisy rock that's difficult to categorize, Melbourne band, Tetrode Kink, was formed in late 2005 by five unlikely lads who felt compelled to fuse their talent and tastes to create noise. The Australian band is fast gaining a cult following amongst lovers of rock, punk and indie noise alike. From the darkest dungeon back rooms in pubs through to center stage at Melbourne's hidden-alley bars, the band are making an undeniable impact on a city within which underground music is rampant. An original and unique approach married with experimental technique and skill, Tetrode Kink create the type of music that could easily be aligned with Sonic Youth, Swans and the No Wave movement. Taking to a cabin in the hills this month, the quintet of video editors, graphic designers and electronic engineers, will record the finishing touches to their debut album set for release 2008.
