Weather Report by Leonora Oppenheim

Rainwave1.jpg

Weather Report, the second eco-themed show at The Gallery @ Adventure Ecology in London, looks at the environment and the threats of climate change. A slight departure from the disposable themes in the first show Waste & the Natural World that we wrote about earlier this year, Weather Report is about the ephemeral, focusing on the sky, and more specifically, the clouds floating through it. The show features the work of two London-based artists Dawn Shorten and Kate Williams.

Inspired by the traditional landscape paintings of Constable, Turner and the Dutch Masters, Shorten makes beautiful monochromatic illustrations. Using gouache on drafting film, she tries to capture the transient and infinitely varying forms of clouds as they move across the sky. She says that, “it is an irresistible challenge for an artist to explore something which is so elusive and visually ambiguous to portray.”

Kate Williams' work is more conceptual in form, using glass and light to "capture the fragility and movement of falling rain." Her glass raindrops hold distilled water and pulsing light, invoking impression of clouds, rain, and lightning storms. She says, "I attempt through the medium of glass, using my breath and gentle manipulation, to capture nature's elements."

Juliet Rose: Atmosfear
Juliet Rose, the London painter whose subject is the ephemera of everyday life, is one of nine artists showing their work in the upcoming show called "Atmosfear." Opening next Monday, 4 December 2006, at the Air Gallery in London, the works exhibited in the week-long show all share "a profoundly atmospheric aesthetic." For Juliet, that includes silver combs, keys and other trinkets that she...
Deviate
Featuring work by artists who are "altering materials and repurposing objects that prompt viewers to investigate the act of looking and perceiving," the unifying theme behind the impending group exhibition "Deviate" may be a little broad but it makes for a show that speaks to CH's penchant for the obsessively subversive. The nine artists represented take a largely conceptual approach using a diverse collection...
Jonathan Schipper: Irreversibility
With his high-concept mechanics, artist Jonathan Schipper's latest exhibition, "Irreversibility," is just as stunningly clever as the animatronic sculpture we watched him build a few years ago. Held at Brooklyn's Pierogi Gallery, the show is both a spectacle and showcase of recent sculptures and installations by Schipper, including "The Slow Inevitable Death of American Muscle," (pictured above) in which a live, head-on collision takes...

Both share roots in the New York City transit system subway graffiti movement of...
