WA Video Installation by Ami Kealoha

WA_knoll_sm.jpg

Transforming the 17th century facade of Knoll's Paris headquarters on St. Germain, WA is a site-specific video installation by WIKA. Launched last week, the piece constructs the made-up history of the design company's founders Hans Knoll and Florence Schust, playing on the real way the pair used a minimalist approach to design to define Knoll

Using a two-screen format and high-tech projection, the screens either form one vertical image, play alone or with each other and live editing software (developed by WIKA) creates a different version of the story each time it plays. Much like WIKA's other provacative video installations and Doug Aitken's recent use of the MoMA as the screen for Sleepwalkers, WA dynamically uses public space to reinvent architecture and cinema simultaneously. Cool Hunting Video Presents: Electric Windows
Bringing together 24 street artists from all over the world, Electric Windows is a semi-permanent installation of large-scale work exhibited on the exterior windows of a 19th century blanket factory in Beacon, NY. We traveled to the small town earlier this year to meet some of the artists and watch them make "urban art" in a not-so-urban setting. We also interview one of the...
Pergola
Designed by Montreal-based landscape architects Claude Cormier, Pergola was a 2006 pop art piece comprised of 90,000 plastic balls arranged in the form of a wisteria bloom at Le Havre City Hall. A tribute to Monet, who spent his childhood there and much of whose work featured Wisteria, the piece works with an existing vine, creating an interesting juxtaposition between the artificial and the...
Mock-Ups in Close-Up
Working in design retail, one of my favorite job perks was visiting architecture firms and sometimes catching a glimpse of building models. Beyond architect biopics, I have little recollection of seeing building models used in film, though apparently there's a wealth of footage available. Architect Gabu Heindl and film theorist Drehli Robnik recently compiled such footage (a curated selection of 80 clips) into an...
Lumen Eclipse
Giant screens loom over Harvard Square (below), a pedestrian thoroughfare that's an integral part of the Boston metropolitan area, displaying avant-garde works of video art by established and up-and-coming artists from around the world. Updated monthly and cleverly named Lumen Eclipse, it's no insular clique. In fact, Lumen is actively seeking submissions from artists on its website, even going as far as offering a...
