Cool Hunting
The Nesting Desk, by Brooklyn architecture and design firm 4 Pli, features an integrated screen made of stacked wood to hide and house a CPU without sacrificing ventilation needs. Providing a more organized experience, a plate of knotted wood creatively disguises wire holes located on the desktop (above right) and a sliding keyboard tray is optional. Constructed from natural birch plywood, aluminum details are added to maintain the desk's light-weight durability. Space efficient, the desk is pre-fabricated to easily nest and combine with others to form clusters of larger work spaces. Options include an integrated privacy screen to help separate space and a helpful tack surface.
Made to order, the Nesting Desk is available for $2,389. Inquire at 4 Pli.

by Laurice ParkinAfter several visits by our small army of NY-based contributors, today we bring you a few of the best we found at the new Sunday morning ritual of Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Flea. Be sure to check back throughout the day to see more of what the new church has to offer. Bowling Alleys, icons of both Americana and funny shoes, have not...
by Laura Neilson This past weekend's Bklyn Designs show was host to an array of local designers and manufacturers, including EcoSystems brand bamboo furniture. The green-minded company utilizes a innovative tool-free assembly system that relies on interlocking aluminum pieces rather than nuts, bolts and screws, allowing for construction of the brand's modern-looking Bamba chair in a matter of minutes—a godsend for the Ikea-weary. In addition...
A Pratt graduate who cut his teeth in the Brooklyn design scene, jewelry and furniture maker Kiel Mead represents the next generation of New York designers. Taking inspiration from such disparate sources as everyday objects (car keys, chewing gum, retainers) and Catholic iconography (Saint Sebastian, crucifixes), his work mixes irreverence with first-rate craftsmanship. In this video, we visit his Brooklyn studio where he shows...
For the forthcoming ICFF in New York, Brooklynite Bradley Price was one of eight designers selected by Bernhardt Design to be featured in the ICFF Studio, a new platform for showcasing prototypes during the furniture fair. Bradley's design, "Angle Parking," is a clever take on the ubiquitous—and often boring—bookcase. By skewing the angle of the bookends to 45°, the shelving can accommodate 12½" deep...
The recent revival of natural aesthetics continued at all the shows during the London Design Festival, highlighting the new awareness of eco-friendly design. Whether in floral patterns, organic forms or just in materials, the environment was clearly an inspiration and wood was everywhere. Here are five of our favorites. The "Made in Denmark" stand at 100% Futures was one of the highlights at the...
Lwindesign's Mirror Banquet Table would make a stunning addition to any dining room. Modular in design, the full layout seats 20, but can be reconfigured to seat 10. Impracticalities aside, the piece adds a whole new perspective to mealtimes. Made locally in Brooklyn, it's available by request from Lwindesign. More images after the jump.
