Greubel-Forsey Invention Piece 1 Watch

by Watchismo

greubelforsey3.jpg greubelian1.jpg

A truly spectacular wristwatch, the Invention 1 features time indicators revolving around the edges of Greubel-Forsey's unique invention, an open double tourbillon 30°.The dynamic duo have been creating spectacular timepieces since they teamed up in 1999. And coming off the Opus 6 they created for Harry Winston, they are back and badder than ever with this Invention Piece 1.

The red arrow indicates the hours, while the blue arrow displays the minutes. The time shown above is 5:17. Other indicators on the dial show traditional seconds and power reserve. On the back, the story of Greubel Forsey and the Double Tourbillon 30° is painstakingly engraved. See more images here.

by Leonora Oppenheim

PopCastpresenters.jpg

If you are needing some inspiration and motivation this week, the Pop!Casts from Pop!Tech might be just the answer. The people who create the Pop!Tech new ideas conference each year and brought you the beautiful AntiBabel EP have recently released vidcasts of some of the most inspiring presentations from their conferences over the last three years. So far there are 22 casts online but new segments will continue to posted every few weeks. Pop!Tech tell us that the Pop!Casts are “published under a Creative Commons license, meaning you can distribute, translate and edit them as you wish for noncommercial use. Sharing Pop!Casts with peers is one of the ways you can inspire collective thinking and action around the topics you’re most interested in.”

We recommend presentations by Richard Dawkins, world-renowned biologist and evolutionary theorist, Reggie Watts, human beat-box polymath musician and comedian, Lester Brown, preeminent environmentalist and head of the Earth Policy Institute and Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired magazine and author of The Long Tail.

Update: Check Pop!Tech later this week for Brian Eno's talk and a performance by Rodrigo y Gabriela.

Pop!Tech 2007 will once again be held in Camden, Maine in October. This year’s theme is "The Human Impact."

FAAP x Surface to Air São Paulo

by Phuong-Cac Nguyen

4FAAP.jpg

The Brazilian outpost of Paris-based creative group Surface to Air just launched an impressive collection in their store from the post-graduate class of São Paulo’s FAAP, a renowned fashion design school in the city. Under the tutelage of their professor Jum Nakao, a respected Brazilian designer, eight students conceived and designed a collection that taught them not only about the details behind design itself but the entire process, from inception to final product in a store.

The resulting 30-piece line for women is limited and individually numbered. Each item began with a definitive structure, and students were encouraged to then fill in the spaces as they wanted. Pieces seem to literally burst from their constraints, and there are dresses that embody a marionette feel with adjustable straps. The budding designers were also pushed to think about textures in their design and to analyze how the inside and outside of their pieces “communicate,” as Nakao put it. So you’ll find tops with wide straps piercing going from one side to its reverse.

The designs are ephemeral and fluid, and with colors limited to only black, white and gray (with a hint of red threading as a “scar,” Nakao explained), they take on a simplicity that nevertheless defies convention. For more images go here.

We Are All Photographers Now

by Jonah Samson

TousPhotographes.jpg

The Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland has developed an interactive exhibition called We Are All Photographers Now!, which hopes to respond to the rapidly changing world of photography in this digital age.

The show, which began on 2 February and will run until 20 May, is soliciting photographic submissions from people all over the world, and has currently received images from almost 7,500 photographers from 128 countries. Anyone who is interested can submit a photo online.

Each week a hundred images will be chosen at random by a computer and printed in archival quality. The selections will then be shown in the museum for 1 week before being replaced by the next selection. All photos included in the exhibition will be entered into the permanent archives of the Musée de l'Elysée. If your photo is selected, the museum will also send you an email with an installation view of your work as it was shown in the gallery.
