Cool Hunting

BRIC’s Rotunda Gallery presents “País de Poetas: Contemporary Art and Artists from Santiago to Brooklyn”, curated by Isolde Brielmaier and Omar Lopez-Chahoud which opens Wednesday, 21 March 2007, at 7pm. The show features ten Chilean artists, seven of which who live in Brooklyn (Francisca Benitez, Ivan Navarro with Courtney Smith, Diego Fernandez, Cristobal Lehyt, Felipe Mujica and Nelson Rivas) and three others (Patrick Hamilton, Juan Cespedes and Mario Navarro) who live in their homeland.
The work deals with issues of identity, economics, history and migration in living as an expat in a foreign country and what it means to be Chilean in the U.S. A kind of social commentary as they see and experience life as an outsider, the show's quite political.
Rivas, whose work deals with censorship, painted a mural on the gallery wall (pictured above right), covering it with the title of his work "El temor a la inserruccion de los desposeidos /The fear of the insurrection of the dispossessed" to prevent the audience from getting the full picture. Much like during the years of the dictatorship in Chile, Rivas says, “the system blocks any attempt at change in this world but, at the same time it's impossible to cover it all—leaving a little hope.”
On Tuesday, 17 April 2007, at 7pm, the Gallery will host a discussion with select artists from País de Poetas, moderated by Christian Viveros-Faune, the director of Roebling Hall Gallery. A performance by Nutria N.N. will follow.

by Sheena SoodBrooklyn fashionistas might be familiar with Harriet's Alter Ego, a women-run Brooklyn boutique. It opened eight years ago and continues to showcase clothing collections and one-of-a-kind pieces made by owners Hekima Hapa and Ngozi Odita . The back of the store also houses a small art gallery showcasing monthly exhibits by emerging artists. Next week artist Nathaniel M. Quinn will put up...
This Friday, 8 February 2008, Ad Hoc Art Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, will play host to a large group of both established and emerging artists from the realms of street art, pop surrealism, lowbrow, illustration, print making, and tattoo. Through this group exhibition, promising young artists will have the chance to exhibit side by side with some of the more established artists in...
After exhibiting up and down the eastern seaboard, Brooklyn-based sculptor Mark Andreas has crossed the East River to make his Manhattan debut. Andreas' Reactive Sculpture Series includes the hulking 400-pound Seed Spreader (pictured), an intimidating machine equipped with three-foot spinning blades. It brilliantly expresses the fear associated with the industrialization of mass food production that, in the words of the artist, “conceptually speaks to...
Fans of Pee Wee’s Playhouse, RAW and SLASH magazines and the comic character Jimbo know and love the work of Gary Panter. You probably know it too, having seen his “jagged lines and surreal cartoons” in magazines, on TV and on the internet too. “Pictures from the Psychedelic Swamp: 1972 – 2001” a micro-mini retrospective of thirty years of drawings, sculptures, painting and installations...
Galeria Fortes Vilaça, one of São Paulo's most important galleries (which represents such art heavyweights as Os Gemeos and Vik Muniz), is breaking in its new Galpão Fortes Vilaça archival space this weekend with an internationally studded group show called "God Is Design" curated by P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center's Neville Wakefield. The curator took cue from the industrial design of the building to inspire...
A simple description of Jimenez Lai's work is difficult. Taking architectural plans and renderings, the Ohio-based artist brings them into the world of comics, drawings and models in two- and three-dimensions. The juxtaposition exposes the absurdity of CAD in comics and comics in CAD. (Click image for detail.) This isn't the first time Jimenez Lai has been written up but now he's breaking through...
