Cool Hunting
A new slightly beefy typeface called Soho was released yesterday by Monotype out of the U.K. Good for publishing and corporate branding, Soho features many different stylistic sets, allowing for personalization (Regular is pictured right). Lightweight, condensed, or super-strong and heavy, it's a versatile font based on a slab serif (characterized by thick and blocky serifs) that's clean and easy to read. Typeface designer Sebastian Lester's goal was to make a font that looked very 21st century and he comments, "perhaps 60,000 fonts in circulation and only a small handful of multi-weight, multi-width slab serif designs exist." Add one more to the handful.
For more information, to see all the stylistic sub sets and to purchase Soho visit Monotype.

One of the hardest working typographers we know, Mike Perry is currently working on his second book. Check out the Brooklyn-based designer's first book, "Hand Job: A Catalog of Type," which is a great collection of hand-drawn type out out by Princeton Architectural press. It's hard to look at this site and not be motivated to get working too!...
Love her or hate her, brand Kate Moss is about to blow up even bigger. Perhaps more interesting than the forthcoming Topshop line of clothes, though, is the story behind her new brand identity (above). You can read how the seminal Peter Saville linked up with typographer Paul Barnes to create it in a great little article over at Creative Review....
The idea of a film about a font really stimulates the part of my brain that likes left-field documentaries and clean typefaces. Gary Hustwit's Helvetica has its world premiere next week at SXSW in Austin, Texas, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of said typeface. It then goes on tour round the USA, taking in several universities and festivals, and seeks to explore not...
Keeping a daily journal is not as easy as it sounds-- I go in spurts, weeks of writing in my book, sketching in my black book, and then sudden dry spells. Micah Bauer's graphic journal has inspired me to keep documenting my ideas. He had pretty strict rules to abide by though-- one composition a day, each day, for 365 days straight. His compositions...
I think House Industries' new site House33 is both an announcement for a new set of fonts and a new London shop. But, I'm not sure. Either way, the site is lovely....
The most talked about exhibition during the Salone del Mobile was that by Maarten Baas. Set within the chaotic mess of a working auto garage in the Zona Tortona, the show covered works to date, along with a preview of new collections for Contrasts Gallery and Established & Sons Limited. The choice of space initially felt to me like a commentary on the hyper-produced...
