Body Volume Index Machine and Clinical Research Study by Evan Orensten
Body Volume Index, a U.K.-based company, has developed a new method of measuring body fat. The method and company name are the same, or BVI for short. Patients step into an enclosed area where they are subjected to non-invasive, non-radioactive light technology; in less than seven seconds their bodies have been scanned.
Currently undergoing a two year clinical research study in the U.K. (details at Body Benchmark) the methodology hopes to prove that BVI is a more accurate reflection of body fat than BMI or other current techniques.

Switchgrass-Derived Bioplastics
Environmental tech company Metabolix recently announced that they have discovered a way to derive large amounts of bioplastic (plastics made from renewable biomass resources) by growing it in switchgrass, a common prairie grass. Their efforts are part of an increasing movement to manufacture alternatives to petroleum-based plastics by making biodegradable plastics out of renewable resources. The company uses the plant to create its own...

Helly Hansen Odin PCM Soft Shell: Self-Regulating Temperature Control Jacket
Regulating body heat is always a challenge during cold weather — it's always too hot or too cold, especially when running around town from crowded subway to overheated office. Helly Hansen's Odin PCM soft shell jacket solves the problem with technology that automatically adjusts according to your body heat. Fabric called Phase Change Material uses paraffin to store and release heat when needed most....

Plant Sense and the GardenGro Sensor
Plant Sense, a start up announced in 2006, is just entering public beta testing of its GardenGro Sensor. Think of it as Nike+ for your plants. After connecting the sensor to your computer and telling it whether you want to monitor an existing plant or analyze soil for a new plant, place the sensor (pictured above) in the soil/next to the plant for 24...

Highlights from the Spring 2008 ITP Show
Our pilgrimage to the ITP show yesterday yielded more than a few great finds. From musical interpretations of an individual "color profile" and automated paintbrush robots to oversize models of a scrotum and a digital version of Exquisite Corpse, the projects (as usual) ran the gamut from the sublime to the absurd. Colorful Melody Colorful Melody analyzes a person's color profile based on their skin...

Motorola ROKR E8
The lastest in Motorola's line of music phones, the ROKR E8, has a new feature that (believe it or not) rivals the iPhone. The innovation is a little piece of tech called "localized haptic feedback," which makes pushing a button on the touch screen feel like actually pressing a button. This is achieved by a small vibration under the spot where you touch, and...

Bruce Shapiro
Northern California-based artist Bruce Shapiro makes the kind of kinetic sculpture that mesmerizes and dazzles visitors at science museums using computers and simple motors, a practice he terms "The Art of Motion Control." In episode 94 we visit Bruce at the Maker Fair and at his home to learn more about works like "Pipedream," effectively a screen that uses bubbles in place of pixels,...
