Jonathan Harris
by m ss ng p eces
A Cool Hunting exclusive, we caught up with artist Jonathan Harris as he unveils his new project Universe, an artistic take on a system that explores modern mythology. He enlightened minds with his presentation at the TED conference last week and we visited him in Brooklyn to get an intimate look as he flips through his travelogue of time spent in Vietnam and Burma. We are also guided through We Feel Fine, a global study of human emotion using large-scale blog analysis, and he volunteers his creative thought process behind the piece. He also shares his view for the future of connectivity, why the page is no longer enough and his drive towards new formats of presentation and story telling.
This also marks Cool Hunting Video's debut in HD meaning improved picture quality and widescreen 16 by 9 formatting. Enjoy.
Karizma: A Mind of Its Own
by Ami Kealoha
Baltimore’s Kris Klayton, aka Karizma, displays a broad spectrum of musical directions—from hip-hop to deep tech-y house—on his new full-length R2 Records release, A Mind of Its Own.
Karizma started out as a DJ at the ripe age of 13 in Baltimore, an often-overlooked hotbed of underground club culture. Following a stint on a Bmore radio station playing hip-hop, he and a house DJ colleague, DJ Spen, formed a production team. The duo went on to remix numerous soulful house records as well as more widely known artists like EBTG, Roy Ayers, and Lenny Kravitz.
A Mind of Its Own, however, is a distinctly solo effort consisting of twelve almost completely instrumental tracks (save a few sampled vocal loops) with nods to J Dilla and the Detroit hip-hop sound, Bmore club, afrobeat, classic soul, and more. It’s probably more suited to dancing than dining, but the diversity and maturity of the material make it more listenable than most house music.
Karizma stays close to his DJ roots with a weekly residence at Baltimore’s Sky Lounge and frequent international appearances. Pre-order A Mind of Its Own (out 20 March 2007) from Dusty Grooves, CD Universe or Amazon.

Perch! Birdfeeder
by Tim Yu
This has been around for some time now, but with Spring around the corner birds will soon come back into the area and this birdfeeder will keep them coming back for more. Designed by Amy Adams and handmade by Perch! in Brooklyn, it is made of white low-fire earthenware and comes with a 36" vegetable tanned leather cord. Resembling a UFO of sorts, the bird can enter the feeder or perch itself on top to peck at seeds. At 7" in diameter and 5" tall it can hold about 2 cups of feed and is dishwasher safe.
It is available for $78 at Branch Home, an online retailer that is committed to sustainable design and donates 10% of profits to organizations that promote environmental responsibility.
No Quiet Boutique in Japan
by Tim Yu
No Quiet is a small boutique located outside of Tokyo on a quiet, non-descript corner. Offering clothing, jewelery, bags, stationary and other accessories, some of our favorite items (pictured below from left to right) include the hook t-shirt, a loosely pieced together cotton t-shirt, the 2-hole ring and the receipt calendar, which is printed on a receipt roll. No Quiet and their design team focus on clean lines and some items from the store were featured in the Mori Museum of Tokyo.
