Swizz Style Henry Air Purifier
by Ami Kealoha
Whether you think it resembles an aardvark or a leech, the new Henry air purifier by Swizz Style is a modern low-profile way to remove all the junk—dust, pollen, soot, spores, smells, some germs, etc.—from the air. Using a five-stage filter, air enters through the base, passing through a carbon/HEPA filter, a plasma generator, a Titanium Dioxide and UV light, a negative Ion generator and a fragrance holder (which we hope is optional) before it's recirculated into the room. The Henry features an automatic shut-off, stands just over 50" tall, makes very little noise and is available in white metallic or black metallic. Only recently launched, contact Swizz Style at info [at] swizz-style [dot] com for more information.
Vintage Gucci Picnic Set
by Evan Orensten
I love over-the-top travel accessories like this vintage Gucci picnic set I stumbled upon in Brooklyn. The zip-top bag holds two thermoses, a silver box for your humble food, and collapsible bone-handled cutlery.
A quick search didn't bring up any additional details on this set or uncover any other vintage Gucci picnic sets, so if you know of any please send them our way (use the contact form at the bottom of the page).
This little beauty can be yours for $1,675 from Brooklyn's Modest Designs, where additional photos can be seen.
Guariglia + Chen: Qì
by Ami Kealoha
Blurring, compositing and distorting figures of Shaolin monks in traditional Kung Fu stances, artist duo Justin Guariglia and Zoe Chen's recent photographic work interprets the spiritual and more metaphysical sides of the 1500+ year-old practice. Their show "Qì," opening this Friday at Gallery 339 in Philadelphia, is the culmination of the pair's collaborative efforts on the subject. Featuring black and white images of figures arranged into patterns with subtle shifts in density and colorful bodies configured into radiating mandala shapes, the exhibition also includes video among the over 40 pieces of work that will be on display. Reader Find: Knot Skateboard by Build
by Ami Kealoha
Combing through Reader Finds, we noticed yet another deck to file under "skateboards as art." Knot by London-based designers Build was created for Refill Magazine. The laser-cut surface looks like woodgrain, as the name suggests, but also hints at topographic maps and sinuous feather shapes. (Click image for detail.)
It's unfortunately not yet for sale and we have no other info on it, but if we find anything out, we'll let you know. UPDATE: The board is part of an exhibition called Refill Seven (for the seven layers of plywood that make up each deck, which Refill organized. The show features decks limited to editions of 50 by 67 different artists, launching 29 March 2007 in MTV's gallery in Sydney, Australia. Check back for more info. Thanks Tony!
This Old Thing Tie Trios
by Ami Kealoha
From skirts to belts, the necktie has been reinterpreted in many ways over the years, but none quite as flamboyantly as This Old Thing's Tie Trios. Three vintage neckties sewn together make up the accessory, which we like best when worn wrapped twice jauntily around the neck as a kind of cravat-slash-scarf. The look is as dapper as it is over-the-top; call it urban Mad Hatter. Available from new Brooklyn shop Alter for $48 by calling +1 718 784 8818 or emailing alter [at] thisoldthing [dot] net.
