Fat Fingers

by Josh Rubin

Fatfingerslogo

Fat Fingers is a website that searches online auctions for incorrect spellings . More than just internet enabled schadenfreude, discovering typos and misspellings is a way to find items with fewer or no bids. Taking advantage of other's sloppiness is as easy as typing your search into a field, which then directs you to a search of all the common mistakes on the website you've chosen from a pull-down menu. There's also an advanced search function and a downloadable widget for Ebayaholics.

Tempt One Art Benefit

by Tim Yu

A lot of graffiti these days doesn't go much further than a watered-down cliche, but Tempt One isn't "these days." One of the original graffiti writers that pioneered the L.A. scene, his clean old-school style is unmistakable. The Tempt One Art Benefit, a show to raise awareness and funds for Tempt in his battle with ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's disease), will be this Saturday, 10 March 2007, and should not be missed. In an effort to help provide Tempt with the aid he needs, over 120 prolific graffiti and contemporary artists have banded together to produce this benefit at Urb gallery. (Click on images to see the list of artists). Over 100 original canvases and 18 spray can sculptures will be for sale and all proceeds from the event will be donated to Tempt's family. If you can't make the event, go to Tempt's Myspace page to donate.

mi Innovation Center: Adidas Sport Performance Store in Paris

by Tim Yu

mICadidas.jpg

Adidas' new mi Innovation Center, an interactive retail space in Paris designed by Hamburg's Mutabor Design, brings full customization to the masses. Located on the Champs-Élysées, the flagship store integrates a fully computerized experience into a matte black interior.

With just a few steps walking and running on a catwalk-style scanner, foot and pressure sensors analyze shape, size and pressure points. Customers enter details like color and accents on a large touch screen. An interactive "virtual mirror" (recently on Gizmodo), allows the user to try on their personalized shoe (or any other shoe) without taking off their own. And last but not least, the new scan table picks up RFID technology embedded in the shoes to display specific product information.

Peter Sutherland: Game and History of Earth

by Wendy Dembo

lumen2_3.jpg peters3.jpg

Photographer Peter Sutherland has two new publications, Game and History of Earth, which are both launching tonight at an event at Printed Matter in NYC

As you may recall from a previous CH post, Peter is a member of the Chinatown Soccer Club, a loosely-organized group of artists, designers and the like. In addition to playing soccer, Peter has been busily documenting the games and the ever-evolving urban scenery around the soccer field. His new book Game is a collection of these photos, which range from formal portraits to action shots. (Pictured above right.)

History of Earth is a series of photos that moves from the most rural to the most urban settings. (Pictured above left.) As visual person, this project was a way for Peter (someone who'd always had a hard time learning history) to understand and imagine the past. He says he chose images to convey different iconic themes, like war (kids loading a gun), sex (a 70s Playmate puzzle), chance (dice), family (a shot of his brother and another of his granddad’s funeral). Peter remarks, “the line between rural and urban is suburban, which is where I am from and what I know.” Published on full-size newsprint, the book is part of a series called Lumen by artbeat that aims to provide inexpensive exposure to emerging artists.

Both Game and History of Earth are available online from Printed Matter.

Andreas Gefeller

by Jonah Samson

Like another German photographer named Andreas, Andreas Gefeller’s very large-scale color photographs are both beautifully simple and crammed with detail. By rigging his camera from a height of 6-7 feet and at a 90-degree angle to a surface, he photographs every inch of his chosen environment. He then transforms all the images into a grid, which are stitched together digitally to form the final photograph. Although the details are familiar (lottery tickets scattered over cobblestone streets, baby chickens on a farm, newspapers on the stairs), his technique flattens spaces that are normally 3-dimensional and makes them look foreign. The Dusseldorf native’s first North American show is now on view at Hasted Hunt Gallery in New York through 14 April 2007. Click above images for detail.
