Cool Hunting
Cockpit USA is a WWII-inspired clothing line designed to combine new, high-end fabrics with elements such as zippers and buttons that stay true to the originals, creating a highly unique military look. As recently mentioned on Thrillist, Cockpit's newly opened NoHo store in lower Manhattan functions as part museum, part time capsule, where you can buy authentic aviation, military and outdoor artifacts, as well as the latest pieces from the Cockpit USA collection. From their Fall '06 line, we're fans of the classic (and unabashedly now) field jacket (pictured, click for detail). But other styles—from a tweedy grey golf jacket to the hooded brown "Utah Beach Blanket"—are equally fresh choices for fall. Check out the grey golfer, the Utah Beach Blanket and more here.

Fresh off a smoke, Renzo Rosso sat down with us to answer a few questions about Diesel's newest and largest Planet store on swanky Fifth Avenue in NYC. Looking more Mick Jagger than his revered neighbor Armani, it's clear this store is more rock'n'roll than Rockefeller. Located at the corner of 54th Street, the doors open today, just four hours before Renzo bares his Fall...
Of streetwear pioneer Alife's many 2008 accomplishments—which include fresh collaborations (see their Lacoste Polos and the Parra x Patta sneaker for a couple of our favorites) and stores opening in Tokyo and Los Angeles—what might be the most significant for the seven-year-old brand is the introduction of their new NYC retail location, the A.R.C. Sports Store. Opened Monday directly across the street from their...
Good things come in small packages, so great things must come from what has to be the smallest store in NYC, Laura Lobdell's jewelry store in the West Village, which opened last week. I'm a longtime fan of her found object-based designs and with the store's large assortment of playful and quotidian jewelry makes it easy to find the right gift for anyone. Perfect for...
by Christene BarberichOwners of Odin and Den boutiques, Eddy Chai and Paul Birardi, are building out further, breaking ground today on their first shop just for the ladies. Called Pas de Deux, the petite boutique is right next door to Odin and offers the femme yin to its brother shop's yang. Designers like Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone are on the menu here,...
Along with the recent opening of Tretorn's first NYC store, their recently announced Autumn/Winter 2008 collection, called Gullwing, is full of shoes riffing on the preppy classic in ways we can get behind. The Skymra, for example, swaps out laces for asymmetrical elastic bands, transforming the classic silhouette of the tennis shoe into an avant-slip-on. The canvas version ($70) in bright yellow with a...
A new hybrid retail concept mixing fashion and art, walking into FAVA (FAshion/Vintage/Art) feels more like walking into somebody's warmly-lit living room. At a recent opening, a live acoustic blues guitarist set the tone while strangers wandered shoulder-to-shoulder, inspecting eccentric dresses and looking at art for sale. In spite of my doubts, I was quickly reassured when Meda, the owner and founder of the...
