Cal Lane and Elissa Levy: Purfle
by Ami Kealoha
Rife with paradox, the finely-detailed metal sculptures by Cal Lane (Wheel Barrel, 2005 pictured) and Elissa Levy's military-themed felt pieces, mix delicate filigree with more substantial materials and topics. Their complimentary work is the subject of a show called "Purfle" that opens at Foley Gallery in NYC tomorrow, 2 November 2006 and runs through 6 January 2007. Lane will show a series of plasma-cut objects that includes an I-beam, steel car parts and a dumpster. The industrial themes are a thread in Lane's work; older pieces include shovels, tires and dirt.

Browns Focus London and Acne Jeans Stockholm Swap Up
by SummerSeventySix
It's one thing swapping clothes with a friend to extend your wardrobe for a while, but it's quite another swapping clothes stores with a like-minded brand to extend your reach to another country. That's what London store Browns Focus (above left) has done with the Stockholm studio of Acne Jeans (above right), lock, stock and barrel. For ten days (only until this weekend), Browns has taken over the space in Norrmalmstorg square in the center of the Swedish capital, complete with its wide selection of progressive, edgy designer labels and its sales staff. Going the other way over the North Sea, Acne has set up for a few days in the West End to showcase its women's collection, again with sales staff in tow. This foreign exchange experiment has the staff swapping apartments, too. You've heard of pop-up stores—now we've got 'swap up' stores.

Defyra Glasses
by Ami Kealoha

Mixing a clean, Scandinavian aesthetic with warm jewel tones and inventive design, glassware by the Stockholm-based design quartet Defyra lends casual elegance to any dinner table. Swaths of bright greens, deep burgundies and pale lavenders on glass and porcelain evoke the sensual pleasures of eating, as do stemless goblets with angled rims in the same palette. Contact the designers directly at defyra [at] defyra [dot] nu for more info.
American Gulag
by Evan Orensten
Richter Studio in Providence, RI has created these politically-charged American Gulag bracelets and necklaces. Realistic representations of barbed wire made out of rubber or sterling silver, the idea was inspired by Russian gulags and is intended to make a statement about certain practices of the Bush administration. Bracelets range from $14-$225 and a percentage of sales is donated to human rights organizations.
In Vitro Orchid
by Jacob Resneck

Flowers die and potted plants need maintenance, but the In Vitro Orchid is a nearly burden-free gift. In fact, this is a pretty clever idea: A nutrient-rich gel supplies all the flower needs to grow inside a sterilized test-tube, tube, which requires—unlike your partner—zero maintenance. When the flower outgrows the five-inch tube, simply transplant. It's surprisingly affordable ($30) and a surefire conversation starter.
Citi Picker Dog Poop Bags
by Evan Orensten
Citi Picker dog poop bags make cleaning up after your dog easy. The mitten-shape bags are large enough for big hands and fit over gloves when it's cold out. You grab, invert and tie up the bag and toss it out. The second best thing about them is the price—at $3 for a pack of 50 bags ($2 a bag if you order a case) you're not tossing money out along with the poop. Available online from their manufacturer, Seal Bagz.
Paul Smith x Mercian Cycles
by Evan Orensten
Paul Smith, who decided on a career in fashion after a serious bicycle accident when he was 17 prevented him from pursuing his dream of being a professional cyclist, still rides his old Mercian bicycle. He loves his bicycle so much that he was inspired to design these serious new bikes. Announced a few months back, the Paul Smith x Mercian collaboration bikes are finally hitting Paul Smith stores.
Available in either Track bike (above left, £2,800) or Touring bike (above right, £2,900) styles, these hand made bikes are more than just another pretty paint job. Handmade of the finest materials and craftsmanship in Derbyshire, U.K., these cycles aim to please the serious athlete and the aesthete. Technical details and photos of each of the colorways for both models can be found via the preceeding links.
