Cool Hunting
Christopher Willits may not yet be a household name but with previous releases for experimental labels like 12K, Sub Rosa and Plop and a list of collaborations with the likes of Kid606, Matmos, Taylor Deupree (12K), Latrice Barnett (Handsome Boy Modelling School), Paul D'Amour (Tool), and even Ryuichi Sakamoto, Willits has already laid a foundation for a strong following in indie electronic music circles and beyond.
His upcoming album, Surf Boundaries (due out 17 October 2006), is a gorgeous blend of shoegazer guitar, custom-designed software, glitchery, lush 5-part vocal harmonies, treated brass and strings, and jazz improvisation, perfectly timed for the changing colors of fall. Willits' label Ghostly International bills it "Avant Pop" and while the juxtaposition of those terms may seem ironic or contrary to the uninitiated, Surf Boundaries is no hipster fodder. It's genuinely beautiful mature song-craft, unafraid of taking on the bleeding edge.

The third album for Papercuts, You Can Have What You Want, highlights a strongly maturing Jason Robert Quever, who's still a nostalgic songwriter but is bringing a new level of mastery to his trademark sound in good form. Looking back to the first impression of the SF band in 2004, the lo-fi aesthetic of Mockingbird was a hazy and modern take on the old....
Deerhoof, the eclectic indie band from San Francisco, have a new take on the remix. They're asking the public to interpret one of their songs but, unlike the average cover song, there's no definitive version to work from. The band released the sheet music for the song "Fresh Born" through CASH Music, an organization that seeks to foster an exchange of ideas between music's...
This collection of tracks (click here to launch a player) represents a selection of our favorite new jams and a few classics, all inspired by the warm days of summer and activities like beach trips and rooftop parties. When we all started listening compulsively (the crowd-pleasing soundtrack played at my own Memorial Day BBQ), we knew we had a winner on our hands. —Ami...
Minneapolis is usually know for being cold, but as the music scene there intensifies, it's beginning to be known for stellar indie bands like Solid Gold. We can't stop listening to the cheeky synth-pop trio and their most recent album, "Bodies of Water." The repeat-worthy tracks are sharp but full of smooth, ethereal melodies that float around and consume your head. The name Solid...
Last month I saw Brown Wing Overdrive open for Black Pus (the solo project of Lightning Bolt's Brian Chippendale). The band—which formed in DC and relocated to NYC—uses electronics, found objects, banjos, duck calls, jaw harps and whatever else they can get their hands on to make jerky, syncopated, yelping noise. At times referencing shamanistic traditions, at others drawing from Kabuki, the band doesn't...
The bond between brothers can be a tumultuous one, but the musical fruits are plentiful. Just ask the Kinks' Davies brothers, the Greenwoods of Radiohead or the National, who can claim two sets of brothers. This grand tradition extends to Brooklyn-via-Jersey siblings Edward and Jeff Nazareno, who perform under the moniker pow wow! The two have been playing music independently for more than 11...
