Cool Hunting
Bumbakpaks hybrid messenger/backpack laptop bags were created by a consultant who suffered from three herniated discs as a result of carrying around heavy laptops. Combining dual shoulder straps with a rectangle shape, the "Urbanomic" (i.e. urban+ergonomic) bags reduce strain on your back and hang low on your "bum." Designed around the laptop, their revolutionary "bak2Pak" carrying system also evenly distributes weight to promote good posture and conveniently converts from dual strap (to be worn low on your back) to single strap (for slinging over the shoulder) or the strap can be removed entirely for briefcase-style transport. A top-loading pocket features a weatherproof zipper and adjustable padded inserts to keep your computer snug. The bags also have lots of well thought out details like newspaper/umbrella holder, mesh padded straps to keep you comfortable and dry, a pass-through for the handle on your wheelie luggage and plenty of pockets. The bags come in four sizes and various colors; the new pink design pictured is due out in October. Well-made and well-priced ($85-$95), they're available online from Bumbakpaks.

by Christene Barberich and Piera Gelardi Every six months it seems, our laptops get sleeker, smarter and faster. But along the way, the cases that conceal and carry them haven't quite kept the same standards. But there's hope on the horizon—and it's a whole lot better looking than that sad messenger bag hiding under your desk. After a hearty search, we found a range...
Unless you're into the "dad in drag" look, we recommend the Rubicon Rucksack, the most masculine diaper bag we've come across. A rugged buffalo leather bag, it comes with two interchangeable linings that transform it from diaper bag (complete with bottle pockets) to padded laptop bag. The over-the-shoulder rucksack also features a snap-in compartment for a water-resistant diaper pad, custom antique brass baby wipes...
When I first stumbled upon Noon Solar bags at the Museum of Arts and Design exhibit Beyond Green in 2006, these innovative solar accessories were in the early stages of development—in need of a little refinement and perhaps some venture capital. Fast-forward two years and Noon Solar has become a stellar brand with bags befitting Fifth Avenue and downtown alike. Apart from the ability...
From the gas-guzzling to the eco-chic, the following are Cool Hunting's favorite alternatives to transporting yourself and your precious belongings—whether for a jaunt around town, cross-country or overseas. Aptera Developed over the past five years, the Aptera, a three-seat automobile that gets 230 miles per gallon, is finally available to reserve. Three-wheeled and pod-like, the Jetson-like automobile is what I thought cars would look like...
Made from high-grade neoprene and free of zippers or any other unnecessary bulk, Côte et Ciel's laptop sleeves are our new favorites for toting computers. Engineered to fit Macs, the ingeniously simple construction uses the stretchiness of neoprene for a snug fit that, with the aid of small pull tabs, allows the laptop to slide in and out of a narrow opening at one...
A traditional wrapping cloth used to carry goods, 9brand, the Tokyo-based design team Keita and Naoyo Seto. Made from lightweight 1/4-inch urethane fabric, their Furoshiki is a relatively inexpensive ($88) carry bag for notebook computers available in yellow, grey and black from Object Fetish—unfortunately, it won't fit 17" models....
