Fruitree

by Evan Orensten

fruitree.jpg

Fruitree is a concept piece designed by Chia Shee Loh, Antonietta Fortunato and Elena Godenzi. They were motivated to solve the out of sight, out of mind problem with fruit that goes uneaten and spoils. The fact that fruit grows on trees does not go unnoticed in this design, where the results are both decorative and literal. Circulating air is pushed throughout the Fruitree, keeping the fruit fresh longer.

Audioengine 5

by Ami Kealoha

A5 Blk Sm Ae 1 Ae 4

Designed for the increasing number of audiophiles who are making the switch to an iPod-specific system, Audioengine's new set of slick-looking powered speakers are a compact option with rich, nuanced sound quality.

For the weeks we've been enjoying them at CH HQ, they've enhanced everything from Too Short's latest hyphy-heavy release to the warm melodies of vintage Beatles tracks with real, rich bass that stays crisp even at high volumes (at least up to a point). Featuring wood cabinets, an iPod charger port, two audio inputs, an Airport Express power outlet and more, Audioengine 5s have all the specs you'd want from stand-alone speakers in a size that's small enough to tuck into a bookshelf.

Available in black or white for $350 from Audioengine.

The Ecopod E1

by Letizia Rossi

ecopod-e1-open.jpg

An appliance that cleans up recycling and makes it easy to be green has arrived. The Ecopad E1 works similarly to a trash compactor and can hold up to 60 crushed containers. By replacing ad-hoc recycling methods the Ecopod E1 makes recycling more efficient at home, in the office and in schools.

The Ecopod E1 is a self-contained unit with storage capacity for bottles, newspapers, plastic bags and other recyclables. Once the container is compacted using the foot-activated lever it is stowed in a bin and ready for curbside disposal. As added incentive, filled pods are redeemable at certain recycling centers for up to $5 depending on the state.

The Ecopod was designed in partnership with BMW Designworks USA, and is available online from Ecopod in black or white for $328, and starting in December 2006 also at Williams-Sonoma.

The Ballet: Mattachine

by Letizia Rossi

mattachine.jpg

I just got my copy of Mattachine, the debut CD from The Ballet. The handmade package features a simple triangular pattern printed on the disk, erotic drawings printed on a sheet of paper from a legal pad, and the liner notes suggest a very literal stemming of the rose from the attached pin.

Self-proclaimed "Sissy-pop," The Ballet's debut CD features members of The Aislers Set, Voxtrot and The Baskervilles. Recalling Holiday-era Magnetic Fields, The Hidden Cameras, Belle and Sebastian and The Smiths, their formula of "4 queers, 3 chords and 100 melodies" has us hooked.

The limited run of 200 is already sold out, but try pre-ordering directly from The Ballet and check out their a MySpace page to hear works-in-progress.
