Words like "standard" and "reference" are often used when describing the Linn Sondek LP12 turntable. First introduced in 1972 and tweaked (on the inside) over the last three decades, it remains a much loved (and occasionally hated) icon in the serious hi-fi scene.
We're not qualified to extol about its technical benefits (or failures); we'll leave that up to the hi-fi aficionados. But we will tell you that it's music to our ears (and eyes), and rightfully earns a spot in the CH Classics library.
Setting yourself up is no casual affair. The turntable (around $2,000) requires the Linn Lingo power supply (around $1,500). You'll need a cartridge (Linn's Akiva will set you back around $3,000) a phono preamp (Linn's Linto will set you back another $1,600) and speakers (sky's the limit).
The Linn Sondek LP12 turntable comes in Black Ash, American Cherry, Rosenut, Maple and Walnut.

A collaboration between Italian designer Luigi "Allergic to Straight Lines" Colani and German piano-makers Schimmel in the late 1990s, the Pegasus grand piano looks like something you'd see on a Star Trek set. Updates to the classic form include a slightly curved, ergonomic keyboard (eliminating any need for the player to move their body), an electrically-controlled hydraulic lid (to control projection) and a fully...
I swear I'm not that big of a nerd, but anything that kind of reminds me of Star Wars is just totally awesome, especially when it happens to look like the Death Star. The Orb from mStation is just that, a sleek and stylish "Made for iPod" desktop docking station/speaker system that, just like the name suggest, is an orb that packs a powerful...
Not since the '40s has the basic design of the guitar undergone such a major change as it has with the Novax. The brainchild of master luthier Richard Novak, he designed his trademarked fanned-fret system for six, seven and eight string guitars, allowing bass strings and regular guitar strings to combine in one instrument. Classicists may think the Novax 8-string is an an oddity,...
The Conscious Forms collection by Junior Phipps shows this British designer having fun at the intersection of form and function. Each of his light and speaker designs take on tactile and curvaceous forms, but these shapes also help them to function in flexible ways. Take the Egg Acoustic for example, which looks more like a Brancusi sculpture than a speaker. It's made from layers...
Our friends over at Imeem, the internet's fastest growing social networking site according to the latest Comcast figures, have an Eskimo Joe design contest running at the moment on their group page. It's all very simple: Listen to the album, which is streaming on the page, choose your favorite song, and create album art for it as if it was going to be produced...
Maybe because we're excited about the upcoming U.S. release of Control or maybe just because we appreciate any interpretation of Peter Saville's pulsar-inspired design, but either way +41's new Fairtilizer t-shirt turned our head. Developed for a music sharing site (called Fairtilizer) that +41 is art directing, the 100% cotton tee is a nice addition to the rest of their (almost) all black-and-white 2007...
