Shutzmarke

by Ami Kealoha

Belgian-born Tim Coppens started his Shutzmarke brand over five years ago with a design studio, gallery, and store in Antwerp taking a "different approach to street culture in Belgium." Fast-forward to 2006 and the young designer launches his first collection in a line of clothing that will feature a specific, themed design each season. For this initial offering, called Sanbitsar, Coppens limited the line to above-the waist items (a complete collection's due out January 2007), including t-shirts with accents, like an exterior sleeve label in gold thread, a double-layer bottom hem, and an interior patterned seam. The iconography here (skull-like shapes, other creatures, and pinwheel designs) also shows up on hoodies, in sculptures, and gold charms and overall has a tribal, nordic feel and his description of Sanbitsar—"A world where evil ponies are killed, boys don’t cry, seigneurs de la guerre disguise themselves as walrusses, and japan is the beloved land of beer and clowns—sounds like the stuff of myth.

Suicide Girls x Needled

by Ami Kealoha

The latest contributor to help make Suicide Girls a lot more than just a skin site, is none other than Tattoo Revue, as she calls it, is a weekly recap of the world in tattoos, a kind of "Needled for those with Attention Deficit Disorder." Also giving Marisa a chance to cover some topics outside of Needled's scope, today's debut installment runs down the most recent tattoo-related celebrity news before a bit on LA tattoo artist Roni Zulu and another about Christian body art.

Warhol Watches

by Ami Kealoha

ANDY003.jpg

Taking inspiration from the king of pop art's "resourceful imagination, restless curiosity, and skewed sense of humor," Andy Warhol 15, a collection of new Seiko watches, draw on Warhol imagery to create a wristwear series that's as vivid as the original artworks—and maybe even slightly more ironic . Most innovative are packs of three that, as a whole, make a single image (either a Campbell's soup can (pictured) or a daisy), but also function as colorful abstractions on their own. Others include glow-in-the-dark details, bold, chunky shapes to match the pop graphics, and many are water-resistant. From $75 at Andy Warhol 15.

dpmhi Skateboards

The much-hyped new mhi skateboard decks have arrived at dpmhi in time for late summer fun. From the Autumn '06 mhi collection, the "C.R.E.A.M." deck appropriately features a pattern made from Canadian bills and the "mhi de lys" is an updated fleur-de-lys. The other two boards in the black-and-white series feature graphics by artists Mark Gonzales and Futura. (Look out for Gonzales' show and toy release at dpmhi this coming October.) Also recently-released, dpm teamed up with Destructo on eight limited-edition trucks and coordinating boards. The six camo trucks will be launched monthly, starting with the Tibetan Elemantal Tigerstripe.
