Open Air by Ami Kealoha

Openair

Premiering this Friday, 23 June 2006, with a party and art exhibit, Open Air is Alyssa Natches and Lou Auguste's documentary about contemporary street art that's over three years in the making. Featuring some of the more innovative street artists out there like Faile, Michael De Feo, Dan Witz, Skewville, and ESPO, the film addresses controversies over the use of public space and surveys some of the lesser known forms of "graffiti," including stencils, wheat pasting, concrete castings, wood installations, and other sculptural techniques. The accompanying show consists of plywood sheets installed in the gallery meant to duplicate the industrial sites that often become canvasses. WIth DJ sets by Saheer Umar (TokionFM) and Oja (Sunchild Productions) the event kicks off at 7:30pm at Stay Gold Gallery and runs through 9 July 2006. After the jump, check the flyer and more info.

Pablo Aravena started making this documentary about five years ago. For the next four years he went around the world and interviewed some great graffiti artists. And in the time since they were filmed, many of them, like artists Os...
Papergirl Street Art Project
by Ariston Anderson When it comes to street art, it’s difficult not to reinvent the wheel. We often see the same wheatpaste graphics or stencil styles over and over. That’s why we were thrilled that our friend, Berlin artist Aisha Ronniger’s pet project, Papergirl, is starting to gain traction. Ronniger started the project in 2005 when there was still debate over whether or not to...

by Tamara Warren Longtime studio mates Crash and Daze join forces for a collaborative show of new work opening this Friday, 15 May 2009, at AdHoc Art in Brooklyn through next month. The exhibition is a juxtaposition of two close knit painters that have forged stellar careers with corresponding trajectories. Both share roots in the New York City transit system subway graffiti movement of...
Transformazium Benefit Art Show
by Ariston Anderson Like many post-industrial cities in America, a loss of factory jobs in Braddock, Pennsylvania has led to urban flight. Calling themselves Transformazium, artists Erin Harrell, Dana Bishop-Root, Ruthie Stringer and Leslie Stem along with Swoon are intent upon setting up a shop in a city that needs it most. Their goal is to "use the creative process and locally identified resources to...
