Cool Hunting
Sneaker collaborations are a dime a dozen these days, so it’s pretty rare that something really unique and fresh turns up. Fila and design website Core77 cooked up these kicks for Core’s 11th birthday. They were originally reported to be denim, but closer inspection revealed they’re treated to look like they were carved from blue foam, a popular modeling material in design schools and firms worldwide. Anyone who’s worked with this material (ourselves included) will immediately recognize it. Core77 even replicated a familiar manufacturer’s diamond logo on the side of the shoe.
Other details include an embroidered 77 on the tongue, and what appears to be a thumbnail sketch of a humorous Jagermeister dispenser concept on the insole. Our sample pair also came with both standard and wide laces - no word on what the production models ended up with. These ran the risk of ending up as an industrial designer in-joke, though luckily they look nice with some raw denim and a white tee on a summer’s day. No word on how the blue foam material will breathe, however.
Only 300 were made, available exclusively through core77.com, lots more pictures after the jump.

Everyone's favorite dueling spy duo, Spy vs. Spy, are making their way from the pages of Mad Magazine onto a new limited edition sneaker. Inspired by the classic comic, Puma and Boston-based boutique Bodega got together to create a special shoe based on Puma's classic Sky II Hi silhouette, aptly named the Spy II Hi. Made of premium leather, I especially like the translucent...
DKNY Active Shoes and Semi Precious Weapons frontman/Fetty of Brooklyn jewelry designer Justin Tranter have joined forces to create a limited-edition sneaker. Evoking garage glam spirit of the band and Fetty, the shoes have an upper made of Ballistic Nylon, originally intended for military use and elastic laces with gold-tone aglets and feature removable Fetty "New York Rock" and heart charm hanging from the...
John Maeda, graphic designer, computer scientist, MIT professor and author of Laws of Simplicity, teamed up with Reebok to create the Timetanium Ventilator, a sneaker that's been getting attention lately for how it merges math, technology and nature into a wearable product. The sneaker is a representation of time, one of the most important mantras defined in Maeda’s book. His handwritten code limns the...
The Quiet Life just released its five-shoe collaboration with Lakai shoes. Designed by Andy Mueller, these 5 sets of shoes are available directly through The Quiet Life's online shop and at most finer skate shops and boutiques. "We've been hinting about this for months in our news section about doing one shoe with Lakai," says Andy " When they first asked us to do a...
Tretorn may not pack the brand punch that Nike does in the States, but to tennis aficionados in Europe, this Swedish athletic company is practically a national treasure. Founded in 1891, the company established itself worldwide with their signature sneakers and tennis balls. As a part of an ongoing collaboration, Swedish designers Acne Jeans have released a new spin on one of Tretorn's most timeless...
I appreciate simpler shoes these days, although still with a twist, like these new ones that have been designed for S***r (aka Swear London) by graffiti artist Best One. Coming over like a cross between traditional Vans and a straightforward plimsoll, the dashes of color take them to the next level. The above picture, which is the only one we have, probably doesn't do...
