Zero 7: The Garden by Ami Kealoha

Zero 7, are back with their third full-length album, The Garden, and the harvest is a varied and bountiful soundscape.

Their latest offering is full of what you have come to expect from these gents: laidback deep-pocket backing tracks, warm analog tones, sweet vocal harmonies, and the guest lead vocals of longtime collaborator Sia Furler. But, lush horn arrangements, Swedish-Argentinean vocalist and guitarist José González, faster tempos, and most notably, a few songs that (dare I say) rock out a little, are brand-new directions for the pair.

The Garden is still recognizably Zero 7, but a more experimental, edgy, grown-up Zero 7. Dabbling in a wider array of stylistic influences, the group has graduated from being easily classifiable as acid jazz, trip-hop, or alt-soul. From the subtle new wave bounce of “You’re My Flame,” to the cinematic orchestral drama of “Your Place”, with echoes of everyone from Air (“Seeing Things”) to Simon and Garfunkel (“Left Behind”), The Garden is full of surprises. Though unexpected and ground-breaking, the well-crafted and musically-rich songs onThe Garden proves these two are musical greenthumbs.

Due out 6 June 2006, preorder from Amazon.

The Lovers
There's nothing like a late night radio discovery. On the brink of sleep Monday, I was jolted wide awake by the witty, sexy, upbeat chansons of The Lovers' lovemaking session on the Rob Da Bank show on Radio 1. A little bit saucy, a little bit kitsch, a little bit tongue-in-cheek and oh so very very French, they make Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin...
Bat For Lashes: Fur and Gold
Welcome to the fantastical and magical world of Natasha Kahn. This British singer-songwriter, working under the name Bat For Lashes, has shown herself to be an amazing creative force on her debut album Fur and Gold. The remarkable album was recognized last month with a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize. And her recent single "What's A Girl To Do" was mentioned on...
Monkey: Journey to the West
A fitting way to open Manchester's first-ever international festival, "Monkey: Journey to the West" is Damon Albarn's and Jamie Hewlett's (co-creators of Gorillaz) stage adaptation of an ancient Chinese legend . Dubbed a "circus opera" complete with 45 Chinese acrobats and Shaolin monks (some strung from wires), it's very likely to be an entertaining and amusing collaboration between these British producer/artists and their Chinese counterparts....
Nostalgia 77: Everything Under The Sun
Swirling waves of jangling bells, shells, bamboo and other eclectic sounds weave a soothing texture behind the chords, melodies and words of Everything Under The Sun, the latest record from prolific Oxford, England native Benedic Lamdin, aka Nostalgia 77. His “Nostalgia” is for the Soul-, Spiritual-, Cosmic-, and Free-Jazz of the 60s and 70s. And his music fuses an homage to these classic forms...
