Urban Cast-Away by Ami Kealoha

Girbauddror-1

For the second installment of Construkt, Marithé+François Girbaud's quarterly artist-designed series of objects, New York-based designer Dror Benshetrit created these limited edition handmade ceramic sculptures and jewelry pieces called Urban Cast-Aways. The result of experimentation with ceramic, Benchetrit ultimately used fur to make the collection that includes one-of-a-kind art objects, rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Like Dror's broken "Vase of Phases" and martini glass, his unconventional use of a classic material becomes elegantly subversive. Urban Cast-Aways debut tomorrow 19 May 2006 at Girbaud's flagship store in New York's Soho.

Designed by two twenty year-old New York boys, Nikolai Rose looks extremely promising with their first collection of neckties and jewelry. The ties are beautifully styled with completely original designs made of 100% silk in New York City. Classically cut, the designs are modern and youthful yet as easily worn in a casual setting as with a suit. Their first run consists of six...
Melanie Bilenker
Made using strands of her own hair, Melanie Bilenker creates brooches, pendants and rings featuring delicately-rendered everyday scenes. A graduate of Philadelphia's University of the Arts, Bilenker's work is inspired by the Victorian tradition of keeping lockets of hair or miniature portraits painted with ground hair and pigment to commemorate the memory of a lost love. Her use of physical remnants evokes an intimate connection...
Tattooed Steel
Founded by a Los Angeles-based artist/engineer, Jared Van Orman, Tattooed Steel's line of artist-designed jewelry is a way for the tattoo-shy or wearable art-obsessed to get more images on their body. Designs by Rose Hardy are modern takes on more traditional designs (like those by her father, Ed) and range from angels to surreal images, like a flower and eye (pictured left). Other images...
Blue Gear Works Jewelry
While walking in Soho the other day, I came across a fabulous antique-chic jewelry stand helmed by New York based artist Blue Bayer. Blue uses found objects such as gears, clocks, lockets, spoons and evil eyes to create Victorian, steam punk-style jewelry in his Lower East Side studio/gallery/shop called Blue Gear Works. With each unique piece, he prides himself on exquisite craftsmanship using classic...
