Cool Hunting
In Japan currently, the International Chiptune Resistance Tour touches down stateside next week, bringing "lo-bit tactical specialists" Bit Shifter and Nullsleep to North America. The Nintendo-based music makers are rising fast and each stop on their tour features different visual and audio artists who are also worth checking out. San Franciscans get to experience a line-up that includes x|k using his Midines (hardware that enables MIDI control of the Nintendo) to create sights and sounds, Flight404's live rendered images for Bit Shifter's set, and Cameron Soren's digital collages. It all happens at San Francisco's latest arts and culture apex, Toothless Chandelier at Mighty, next Thursday, 1 June 2006 from 6-9pm.

San Francisco-based Michael Talbott and the Wolfkings's exceptional debut, "Freeze-Die-Come To Life," adeptly moves from pastoral melodies and harmonies to more intricate chamber-style orchestrations—all in the course of an album recorded by Wolfking members and friends of Talbott's, Scott Hirsch and MC Taylor of the Court and Spark. The result of a year in the studio, the finely-wrought instrumentation has a late-Beatles feel, incorporating...
Tonight, July 7th, San Francisco's Arrow bar hosts the 3rd installment of Tigerbeat6's monthly night of the uncharacterizable. All we know is it will be fun. This weeks line-up includes live dance rock from New York-based Shy Child and a set by the DJ who moonlights as a journalist Philip Sherburne. Look for more electro-fun every 1st Thursday....
Just when we thought they couldn't possibly fit any new music festivals into Barcelona's already beat-filled summers, we hear that the organizers of Summercase, Sinnamon Productions, will introduce Daydream, a new one-day festival. What's more, they secured Radiohead's only date in Spain this year. This is no mean feat since Radiohead's been getting serious about their envrionmental footprint and are loath to tour, restricting...
Coming off the heels of touring in Istanbul, London and Copenhagen and in anticipation of his upcoming studio release, Danish electronica virtuoso Hess is More (née Mikkel Hess) will be in Manhattan to offer a five-day workshop that includes interactive performances with Hess' live act. The program will include an open rehearsal, a preview of “Denial” his fourth album and three concert performances at...
Oakland-based artist Nat Russell's t-shirts for Mollusk Surf Shop showcase his increasingly recognizable style. My favorites include "Sea Kat" featuring his signature pipe-smoking lion motif, the "Kyle" shirt which has a wavy-bearded man that bears an unintentional resemblance to musician Kyle Field of Little Wings and "Totally Stoked" one of three new designs for women available in two colors. All shirts are printed on...
The first new record in six years deserves a party. And who rocks the party that rocks the body better than Brooklyn's Les Savy Fav? To celebrate last week's way-too-late release of Let's Stay Friends on French Kiss Records, LSF knocked off two sold-out nights in NYC, one in Williamsburg, the other at Bowery Ballroom. CH was lucky enough to survey the damage at...
