The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife by Ami Kealoha
Sebastien Agneesens is a riot of candy-hued balloons suggestive of the sensual sea creatures in the original. Unlike Hokusai's nearly 200 year-old print, the thousands of balloons that make up the show are an ephemeral medium; Hackenwerth sees the shrinking and shriveling that occurs as a "process of transformation metaphorically similar to our own short lives." More info and a flyer, after the jump.

Dalek and Mars-1 at Jonathan LeVine Gallery
Brooklyn-based artist, Dalek (James Marshall) and San Francisco-based Mars-1 (Mario Martinez) held a joint opening at New York's Jonathan LeVine Gallery this past weekend in a West side/East coast clash of sorts. Originally graffiti artists, both have expanded into various genres like painting, sculpting and designing toys. Using similar techniques and materials, they create otherworldly figures and landscapes. Dalek's bright and contrasting color schemes...

Duke Riley
If artist Duke Riley was born in Ye Olde Days, he would have sailed the world discovering new lands and cultures. Or maybe he would have been a tattooist working on the edge of society covering sailors with anchors and other types of flash. (He founded Cherry Bomb Tattoo.) But, obsessed with circumnavigating the Island of Manhattan, he makes do studying the history of...

Strange Powers
A few weeks ago Creative Time curator Peter Eleey explained that we generally look to art for a transformative experience when he was telling me about the concept behind the group show “Strange Powers,” which opens today 19 July 2006 and runs through 17 September 2006. The works that Eleey and co-curator Laura Hoptman chose for "Strange Powers" are imbued with many more forms...
